hey guys, I have a pair of magnum heads I got for nothing, (it looks like thats exactly what they are worth), well the spark plugs are all rounded off or rotted out from sitting and I can't get them out, Im thinking if i could get the spark plug tubes off then i could get the plugs out. Is there anyway to get the tubes out withought taking a cut off wheel to them?.

Second question
71 stock 318, budget of $600-800. already have a performer intake and carb, is it worth trying to get these magnum heads checked out and try to use. Over the winter I want to put in a cam and headers on the car. I would like to run 9.1 or quicker in the 1/8 mile, car weights 3250 with me in it,3.23 gear. car runs 9.6's and higher now with 2.1 60fts on street tires. I have some drag radials also that I need to get wheels for.

thanks guys

I don't know if they are different than mine but my magnum plug tubes slide out my magnum is a 360 1993 vintage.

Beat the ceramic out. Then hose it for 2 days with a good penetrator(not wd40). Then either use a left hand drill bit, or a big easy out, heating the head helps. and smacking the steel insert every time you walk by it, and get PO'ed again seems to help get the penetration fluid down the threads.

I had to use a pair of pliers to get the plug tubes off. I'd get some PB blast and hose them down with it.

Before you go working on them, you might check them over for cracks very carefully to see if they're even worth messing with. My magnum engine had only about 50K on it, and at least one of the heads was cracked between the valve seats.

It would pick your 318 up a lot to run with the Magnum heads. Especially if you had them milled a touch. You do have to have the pushrod holes machined a little bit or else they can jam up due to the angles with the flat tappet camshaft. Also, you need a Magnum specific intake if you don't already have one, or have someone drill the heads for both bolt patterns.

If you've got $600, you might try saving up a little and just buy some of these:

They've already got the LA bolt pattern, plus they don't crack like the Magnums, have better valves, good springs and flow more.

If you don't mind the Magnum bolt pattern, there's these also:

They're $100 cheaper:

You probably know this, but to run the Mags on your 318, you need different pushrods and oil through lifters.

Good Luck

Steve

I have this cam in my motor right now and it's a really good street cam, it's not too crazy where traffic kills it and it's okay on the track in a mild motor. Remember that when you switch to magnum heads you are getting 1.6 rockers so this will increase the lift of the cam. And if you need some real nice brand new valve springs check out my signature and pm me!
