Swapping a 170 with a 225. What all do i need to replace beside the engine? Is the transmission the same? This is in a 64 valiant. I CAN GET A LONG BLOCK 225 WITH NOTHING ON IT.
Harry

should be direct bolt in. may have to use the 225 exhaust manifold. no other changes needed.

It's a straight swap. Everything from the 170 will bolt to a 225 and you will need to use the '64 oil pan, pickup, and dipstick and tube also for chassis clearance.

There is no difference in the manifolds. Grumpus is correct about the oil pan and pickup, but not about the dipstick and tube. The existing exhaust headpipe may hit the floor when you lift it the extra inch to meet the exhaust manifold outlet (the 225 block is an inch taller); you can put in a spacer or have a new headpipe made. If you are installing a '68-up engine in front of a '67 or earlier automatic, you need the 1/8" spacer ring to go between the early small-nose torque converter and the late large-bore crank flange or else you'll lose trans front pump bushings and seals.

Thanks for the info on the swap. The carb and intake could be to small? Is the bushing for the converter a stock thing or somthing i have to make?

Harry

The intake is identical. Pre-'67 170s got slightly smaller carbs than 225s (1/8" smaller throttle bore), but you wouldn't notice the difference in most normal driving and there's a good chance the larger 225-sized carb has already been swapped onto the car. You can get the bushing from Pat "Torqueflite Patty" Blais [email protected] .
