I'm debating just buying a new one rather than cleaning all the crud off of the old hard one. Do the new gaskets fit properly? ('68 Valiant)

if you can get the seller to give you measurements i woul dask for them and compare to yours,,

do you know who the maker of the gasket is ?? 2 companies making them,,,one companu name is some thing like perfect or persission,,,i cant remember,,,they seem to have the windshield gaskets that fit...

in 1979 i bought a replacement wind shield gasket from chrysler for my 1966 baracuda,,all tho it has been in 2 cars it never fit correctly,,,

i recently bought one from laysons the same one some e bay vendors sell,,i compared it to the orignal,,i measured th are of the new gasket where the mopar replacemnt was in correct,,it compare perfectly to the orignal gasket i stil have,,,
i have been told you can soak the old gasket and revive it,,but cant remember in what,,,i thought they said formula 409 but if i were you ide call a loacl glass shop that deals in vintage cars and ask them,,

I use charcoal lighter fluid, a plastic tent stake , and lots of old rags to clean the original gaskets for reuse. The stake has a V bose and a T profile. The profile serves as flutes for the gunk. Final cleaning with GoJo cream hand cleaner and rinse. It takes 4 to 6 hours to go all the way around one. I'm making 15 or more per hour and I know it will fit.
Majority of the poor fit issues I've read about were for Dusters.

If you buy a new gasket use Steele Rubber company only. They are the best. My good friend is a auto glass repairman and for the old cars they use Steele Rubber. A member on here was having troubles with gaskets until he bought them from Steele. Something to with vulcanized rubber in their products.

Just had a windshield with a new gasket installed yesterday.(69 Valiant) looks good, fits good. a little wavy at the dash line but the guy said it will flatten out when the sun hit it and it gets hot.
