Red Dirt Rising. Not sure about availability. Filmed in Randolph county, North Carolina. About the start of NASCAR. One of the men the film is about, Mr. Harb, still has a garage on north main street in high point, NC where I grew up. Decent film that my family could watch.

Just caught another old one with a young Jeff Bridges on broadcast-Greatest American Hero (it's about Junior Johnson).
It's already been mentioned, but probably my favorite is American Graffiti (one of the best soundtracks ever).
