So yesterday I decided I wanted to plant these Beet seeds I bought the other day. I live in North Carolina now and the weather has been pretty nice lately, though a little cold at night and early in the morning sometimes. This is really my first time gardening, so I started off small with creating a small plot in ground. When I poured the fertilized soil in the plot and evened it out, I poked holes in ground with a stick for the seeds (in a 3x6) and planted a few in each hole. Once I covered them up I was technically done with the planting part, but I needed some sort of defense to keep the animals out...

With 4 PVC pipes, wire fencing (and some wire cutters), multiple zip ties, and some bricks, I made a nice little cage around my garden. I had to be creative and make sure I covered all the gaps so birds can't get in there. I do think the animals won't be too big of a problem, but if they get bad I could electrify the fence.

The Beets will take about 8-10 days to germinate and approximately 60 days to harvest.

Who else has a garden and what are you growing in your garden?

My dad put a small garden up at the farm one year spent alot of time, putting a fence around it to keep the animals out.
About harvest time, there was a ground hog and a rabbit living in the garden, they had tunneled under the fence.
He even had electric hooked up to it, and the deer jumped the fence, got tangled up and still ate the corn.

My wife just plants a few tomatoes and peppers in her flower beds around the house, and knock on wood no animals have bothered them in years.

Whoa that is crazy! Those animals always find a way...glad you have some better luck now with growing.

I never had no problem but my dad is at the farm, the animals give him fits, he is out in the country.
He gave it up a few years ago, mid 70's and just feeds the deer in the feeder, and takes a few peppers and tomatoes from me.
I live in the city, but my wife has more problems with the birds around here tearing her flowers up.

We have been doing the urban gardening thing for a few years now. We live right in town but have an 8700sqft lot. We are up to 5, 5'x10' raised garden boxes.

If I can get my wife to stop planting weird **** that we never eat things will be great.

Just finished up the inside of the greenhouse. Now just two more raised beds to build, then till the 40'x40' garden behind it.

My wife currently has me building her a greenhouse, and carpentry is NOT my skill set!

Don't worry.... The little one is taking up the slack because it looks good lol.... If your wife really enjoys gardening a Greenhouse will be bliss for her. My dad has done gardens all his life and put one up a few years ago and he kicked himself for not doing it a long time ago after he started using it.....

My dad has a secondary hobby with gardening. Catching Varmints with his cages. He takes them down the road to an animal sanctuary. It beats the alternative (kaboom) and it has actually keeps the thieving little buggers in check lol....

I do an 8x4' raised garden every year. I grow tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, peppers and some cucumbers. Small gardens can yield a lot of produce.

Yuck..can't think offhand of one thing green I like to eat...Never been a fan of veggies:):)
Edamame soybeans are the only veggies I ever request!! I can eat broccoli if necessary and green beans depending how they're made. Why can't veggies take like sirloin??
