Running hot!

On a really warm day, and we dont see them very often in Sweden, my Duster runs to hot, today it went close to 212. Take a look at the picture, my fan is almost 3" away from the raditor. How close is optimal? It's a little 273 by the way.

I havent really had the problem before, because it is rarely this hot here during summer.

I would start by adding a spacer that gets you within an inch or less of the radiator, and adding a shroud. maybe also get more and/or bigger fan blades. That fixed a similar problem I was having. If issue continues, then consider moving on to puller and/or pusher fans. Good luck.
 
shroud and clutch fan. If you plan on driving in the desert,an aluminum radiator would help. I am sure there are no deserts in Sweden but I live in a desert in Las Vegas.
 
Thanks for the replys. To beginn with, I will try with a spacer to get the fan a bit closer to the radiator. I also have a shroud that I think I can modify a little to fit.
 
Yup, you need a shroud, I would try that first. A good rule of thumb is the blades need to be half in/half out of the shroud.

Well, my fan was not even in the shroud at all. I could remove the shroud without having to loosen anything else. I think with a 3" space it will be as you describe.

Also, I beleive I have a 160 thermostat, would I be better of with a 180 maybe?
 
Yes, you don't want to run the engine too cool it will cause excessive wear. I run a 180* in mine with shroud, fixed blade fan that sits 1/2 in 1/2 out of the shroud and the fan is about 2" from the rad. I also drilled a couple of 1/4" holes in the metal ring around the t stat. My engine runs right at 180* in traffic, cruising etc. even on 90* days.

EDIT: If you are not running a puke canister, don't fill the rad to the top, just enough to cover the cores.

I went with a 2.5" spacer today, they did not have a 3". I would still like to have the fan a bit more into the shroud, but it made a lot of difference still. It's extremely hot outside today and it never went over 203 even in heavy traffic.

I was so happy with the result so I forgot to take pictures unfortunaty :)

212 Farenheit is not "too Hot"..I run my daily driver 383 Dart Gt between 200 -220 all day long here in SoCal street traffic, both during winter and HOT California Summers; and have done so for almost 7 years now.


Now if yer talking 212 Celsius....:angry4:

Looks strange to me. Could just be the angle of the pic though. May see an even bigger inprovment with a different fan.

I bought this engine and trans from a friend who had it in his 68 dart. He did not have a problem, but I do remember the fan being closer to the radiator in his dart. I think that was my problem. It is still more than 2" away, but it seems to work fine now.

I always get nervous when it creeps up to the red markings around 100 celcius.
 
Remember, if you are running coolant/antifreeze in your system, there is no need to get nervous about running at 212F/100C. One of the purposes of the coolant is to raise the boiling point of the fluid. If properly mixed, your boiling point will be over 230F. If you are not running coolant/antifreeze, drain your system and add it now. It is vital to keeping the engine healthy as it also acts as a corrosion preventer.

You are perfeclty right. I always have coolant/antifreeze, this beeing Sweden it's even more necessary. I do still tend to get a bit nervous, I always think I might blow a gasket or hose or something ](*,)

Well, problem solved now anyway, it stays perfecly in good working temp!§ Thanks again!
 
A shroud would help a lot , and get the fan around 1" from rad. That fan you have looks like one I had years ago , did not work well on my car , one of the blades broke off . A good clutch fan and a shroud will keep you cool , My dart runs at 190 , 200 max sitting in traffic when it is 90+ degrees .
