The May 2007 issue of Rod & Custom magazine, just out, has an article on the process too.

I just pulled my rear spring front hanger out of the mixture...not good, it was in there for a little over a day and the mixture ate the threaded studs all apart. And the studs were not rusted or buggered up. I guess I'll be buying some new ones.

I have been telling people not to use that method for exactly that reason. I use Evapo-Rust or Eastwoods Rust Dissolver for that reason.

I have a spare hanger if you need it.

Powdered molasses mixed with water 5:1 works good also without eating away the part. It does take awhile for it to clean though, It took about a two weeks to clean a really rusty block I have, but it was bad. It takes about a week for a normal rusted part. This type of derusting is non-poisonuos so if you dog or cat takes a hit off of it it won't kill them, powdered molasses is a livestock feed supplement you can find at a feed store.
