First up is a 360 head. This later year model with the air injection holes at the bottom of the ports. They have JB weld in them. Not the way I would do it, but it seems to be working for a number of years on a similar 318 head that was in a running driving everyday 80 mile round trip daily commuter car.
Next is a Older 72 (I think) J head. No air injection holes. From the outside, the novice will find it hard to tell the difference. Take a second and look close. You can see the "J" by the spark plug hole. Theres other J's on the head as well as casting numbers. (915)
Next is the underside of a 318 stock valve head. It's equiped with small valves. 1.75 - 1.50.
The next shot is of the first heads casting numbers. These are located under the head on the runner. Not easy to see.
Then theres the J head. with up close shot of the J on the outside, the casting numbers on the intake runner under the valve cover, not allways there on later heads. And lastly, under head shot of the J where you can see the casting number and letter.
Head sitting next to head, a 318 vs. 360 head is easy to see according to the port size. Theres no mistake when you see this.
On the blocks, you cn see the numbers, on the side, end in there displacement. The last shot is the build date. It's on the otherside of this 318's block.
It's also stamped into the block just below the deck on the drivers side. But I could not get a picture of it. It's small.
