SB Head Gasket Dilema

I looked around in the FABO forums but couldn't locate any threads to help me with this head gasket issue.

Here's the short story.. I'm building a 1967 SB 273 with stock heads for my brother's '65 Dart Convertible. The motor was bored .030" over bringing the final bore dia to 3.655". The available head gaskets all cater to the whole SB line of motors from 273 on up to 360 so the bore in the gasket is 4.100" in most cases. When we lay the gasket on the block the open area around the cylinder is ridiculous, about .240"!!! :thumbdow:

So what do I have to do to locate a set of 273/318 head gaskets so that I don't have to put WAY OVERSIZED head gaskets on this motor?

My motor builder keeps telling me that it's no big deal but he's a Chevy guy :puke:

worse comes to worse can you get copper gaskets and cylinder match them

I had started looking into that possibility. I found Butler Performance (a Pontiac Specialist) but can you recommend others who might already be tooled up for MOPAR engines?

I had the same issue with my 67 273 afew years ago. What I did was use the Mopar orange head gaskets. They have a 4.060 and a .028 thickness. Not an ideal bore size, but it ran fine. The factory used a steel shim gasket at .020 thickness, but they have discountinued for many years. You could have custom gaskets made to your specs, but be ready to open your wallet wide. If it's a stock motor than than use the Mopar gaskets. Summit carries them, patr no. DCC 4120094, cost is 40.00.
 
Cometic will make them in any bore size you want but the clock and heads need a real smooth finish.

Your motor guy is right, even if he's a Chevy guy. Other than adding a small amount of volume to the chamber size and the subsequent reduction in compression there is no reason to concern yourself.
 
you could use tool steel wire like ther oring blocks with and fill the gapor even a copper wire for an inner ring
