What causes the pistons to scuff, on the side facing the outside of the block.
Is this caused by overheating or lack of oiling to the cylinders or?

This has a list of problems:
oiling problem, lack of or low quality
clearance problem
overheating
wrist pins clearance
I can list some other items as well. But is it scratches or metal transffer?

Which cylinder bank? IIRC, #2,4,6,8 are inside thrust side, #1,3,5,7 are outside thrust. It can be caused by what Mrmopar said. Too tight a clearance piston to wall, or heat are the ones I see the most.

so far I have only pulled #3 piston out.
It has some prety good scratches on the piston and the cylinder wall.
These are in the middle of the skirt and also between the first and second ring land.
I'll try to get pics later.
