I'm in the process of converting a column to floor shift. The column shift lever is down at the bottom of the shift tube and I want to get rid of it.

Can anyone give me a reason why I can't just cut the end of the tube right behind the lever?

I see no other purpose for the extra length beyond the jacket other than a place to mount the lever. The white bearing thing and foam seal are up inside the jacket.

Thanks,

- Greg

Technically, anything below the bearing could go.

Thanks for the reply. I actually looked at your webpage where you re-assembled your column, looks like you cut the actual lever arm off at the base and left the ring that's welded to the tube.

I thought I might be able to chisel the whole ring/lever thing off but the tube is too soft. I tried to do it gingerly but started to hack up the tube hence my question.

Time to break out the hacksaw... let's hope I can cut it straight!
