i think my trans is a 904 according to bolt pattern on pan and it shifts 1st to 3rd in less than 50 feet i cant find a modulator valve on this unit any ideas

Do a search on the kickdown adjustment for the 904 I think that is your issue sounds like it is out of adjustment. You want to take care of that it can hurt the trans.

is there a rod or cable any way of checking for a novice or will i have to pay some shop for info and possibly get taken

Should be on the drivers side of the carb down low if it is a stock set up might be a bracket that you can adjust. probably need to move it forward on the bracket. Mine is a lokar cable set up and it works great.

man i bought car from told me he replaced original 6 cyl with 318 and trans from dodge truck and a kickdown lever or rod hit underneath so they left it off i have been under the car but i cannt tell any thing is wrong could you point me in the right direction to see a pic of what im supposed to look at thhanx for all help im trying to do what i can by myself but i dont know what i am looking for also the truck was a 78 or 79

The kickdown rod missing is the problem. BTW: Mopars don't use a modulator valve. That's GM stuff. Get a kickdown on it or you'll burn up the transmission very fast. The kickdown linkage not only provides kickdown and proper shift timing but it regulates clutch pack pressure.

IMO it's in your best interest to not even use the stock kickdown linkage as it is somewhat temperamental and hard to find in good used condition. I have a Lokar cable setup on mine. Much cleaner setup and easy to adjust. Bouchillon also makes a real nice kickdown cable setup. I doubt either will cost you much more (if any) that a original setup in good shape and they look much better. Since you are familiar with a modulator valve it sounds like you know GM's. That being said think of it like the 350 Turbo's kickdown cable setup.

thanks for the reply but to be honest my only knowledge of mod valve came from a so called tranny shop so i need to find someone in jacksonville fla that wont abuse my non knowledge of problem by the way should i shift manually or just dont drive at all

I just assumed you knew something about GM's since you mentioned a modulator valve because the modulator valve works on a GM trans. to regulate shifting. I thought I made it clear earlier but if I didn't do not drive it at all until you get a kickdown linkage or cable installed. It will burn it up the trans. if you drive it like it is because the linkage is also a pressure regulator. Without it the pressure will be low and allow the clutch plates to slip. That'll trash them very fast.

BTW: When talking to any trans. shop, if they mention it could be a modulator valve problem run from them as fast as you can. They do not know Chrysler transmissions if they think they use a modulator valve. No Chrysler transmission ever used a modulator valve.
