Should it be possible to turn the stock fan by hand on a stock 273??

All the belts are on the engine and I gave the fan a quick tug to see if it was tight, it moved around?? All wheels on the ground and in Park??

Thanks
Nick :thumblef:

If the belts are real tight and you are stong enough, you can turn the engine over this way. Usually it is a sign the belts are to tight. Normally you can't do it as the fan will just slip on the belts.

If the engine has a lot of miles on it the compression will be down. I have turned many an old engine over with the fan in a pinch but I don't recommend it-hard on the fan!

Well you said stock fan! Is it possible it is a clutch fan!As the other guys stated it is possible to turn a non clutch fan by hand and also in the process turning the engine over if the belts are tight, are you sure the engine is turning over when you turn the fan.I would mark the balancer and see if it is turning when you turn the fan,and NO the timing will not be off just because you turned it by hand. When you turn the crank you are also turning the cam as long as the chain is installed!

its not a clutch fan. It was not slack and easy to turn. Im still trying to get to grips with mopars as ive has fords all my life. I can tug on my cougars fan all day long and it wont budge!!!
Suppose ill just sit and wait for the TC and stuff to turn up from Year 1.

Thanks for clearing that up for my guys.

273, 2bbl version, has "low" compression,
of 8:8 to 1 when new. It also is Only 273, cubic inches,
and with 8 cylinders, each bore is small.

A 302 ford will not be as easy, to hand turn over,
unless its needs rings.

I can turn over my fresh rebuilt 318 that same way,
with the solid fan, but not near as easy,
as with my tired 273 2bbl.

Prob be a good idea to pull all the plugs,
and do a compression test.

Does the car run ok? :)
