Hey guys,

Giving my 1971 Scamp a new exhaust. Car has a 360 Magnum.

Will be getting long tube headers, 2.5in exhaust with X-pipe, will exit right before the rear tires. Obviously going to be louder, just don’t want it deafeningly loud as I do drive it on the street regularly.

Looking to see what mufflers you guys are running with a setup like this

Here is why I wouldn't. Years back I had a side exhaust as you want to do. High RPM's in 3rd ready to shift 4th and the motor let go. The exhaust oiled the tires and that was the end of that car.

After I wanted a 3 1/2 exhaust with tail pipes so I dumped the 3 1/2 under the car in front of the rear but tied the tailpipes in for the aesthetics and sound coming from the rear. 2 engines later and the oil never reached the tires. This exhaust still allowed 8000 RPM's and flowed great. quiet under part throttle.

This is the only reason as to why I wouldn’t do this. Unlikely to happen, however the possibility is still there

And 8000 rpm is wild. What’s your engine setup?
 
Not a Mopar, but it does have side exits.,
Fenderwell headers, 2"/3 1/2 collector, reduced to a 3", 24"case straight thru magnaflow, 90° bend in front of tire.
Id like an h-pipe, but itd be 5 ft. long, and in the way.
Even if i wanted to, there is no room under the car to go over the axle.

Old picture here of my '65 with side exhaust. They were coming off of Hedman fenderwell headers and Flowmaster mufflers. I liked it. I do remember in Virginia back then side exhaust would supposedly not get thru state inspection. That did indeed snag me once.

pretty much looks like they are out past the tire
 
'71 Duster with side exit. Hooker super comps to 3" out & generic type Flowmasters. Jones exhaust in TN has a good selection of tips in many sizes if you are looking for something like that.

Very good point made by Oldmanmopar regarding exit point.

Sounds good. Not too loud in the cabin due to the angle back. Can't really comment on drone as the car is stripped down for the most part (no extra insulation etc). The exhaust slips on to the collectors and can come off in 5 mins so is not as tight as could be if clamped, bolted up etc. Works for me.
 
Ask yourself, "What is the purpose of side exhaust?"
Form follows function.
In my case, side exit is because there is simply NO room to go over the axle at all. It separates the sound pulses and results in a less-pleasant sound, in my opinion.
My other "fast" (not that fast) car had hooker aeros dumped in front of the axle, but they were along side of the driveshaft, and had turndowns pointed towards each other at about a 30 degree angle. Much more pleasant sound, imo.
 
O.P., to tell the truth, if I HAD to have exits in front of the tires, behind a set of under-chassis headers..... I'd exit them BOTH on the passenger side of the car. That's primarily for sound reasons. I want all eight cylinder sounds to blend, not half on one side, half on the other.
That's what I have, but not because I love the sound. An H-pipe might fix it, but it would be completely in the way.

It will be loud and it sounds like ****! You'll only hear the left side-it sounds like an old 2 cylinder John Deere tractor. Are there any Vipers around your area. Listen to one with the side exhaust and one that had both pipes coming out the rear side by side. Then decide which one you can tolerate. I worked with a guy that had a 69 427 Corvette with the factory sidepipes-it sounded like ****!
 
Self built headers into 3” x then straight out in front of tires. Tried it without mufflers, it was too sharp for regular driving. Added 4” round magnaflows. No problems hearing both pipes, the only stereo in this ride

I agree. The x should balance the sound so you get all eight pulses on each side.
What mufflers are you planning?
I have a theory of how to get a quiet, good performing exhaust. Pick out which type of muffler has the sound you like (triple pass, straight thru or Flowmaster style) get the right size thru pipe for the application, and use the biggest longest muffler that will fit under the car.

Thinking of going with dynomax race bullets
 
Well, the header install is quite tedious. The drivers side is extremely tight. Had to clearance the primaries to clear the steering gear box. Another spot looks to be hitting the steering shaft. It contacts the torsion bar, and it’s extremely close to my power steering hoses. Dougs D453 headers, supposedly they’re supposed to fit quite well.
