1974 318 with single alternator belt and power steering pump. Stock pulleys and locations. All work perfectly for the last 30 years.

I just ordered the sandine 508 ac compressor with dual v belt grooves from Classic air and the proper brackets to mount it. The tech told me to use only one belt. The single belt will run the alternator, wp and the ac compressor off the crank.
To me that’s a lot on a single 1/2” belt. All I see is stretch and belt replacement monthly.

Does anyone know or have done this conversion to alternator, crank and wp pulley to dual so there are two belts driving instead of a single belt and we’re sucessful?
If so- any idea on what engine combination I should be looking for so I don’t end up with a box full of unused pulleys from eBay?

Thanks-
Joe

Never had a problem with a single, and I generally detest dual belts. The pulleys cannot be work unevenly, and unmatched belts do wear unevently, and can begin to fight each other. I used to maintain HVAC, and we had a few multi belt blowers. They can be trouble. Worn pulleys, slight misalignment, or poorly matched belts all contribute

A good 1/2" belt will handle a lot of abuse. Both my old 440 RR and later a 340 swapped in there had "hang on" aftermarket AC with a single belt.

When I added my under hood AC components to my Duster I used the pulleys off a mid 80s truck. It all worked out for me. I removed the single groove alternator pulley and installed the 2 groove from the truck on my fresh rebuilt square back alternator, then just used the crank pulley, the water pump pulley and the AC compressor from the truck. It leaves you with a spare groove on the crank pulley incase you wanted 2 belts on your power steering pump but I didn't worry about that. If your Sanden pump pulley inner groove lines up with the factory single belt, it should work

How would you route one belt around 4 pulleys in a way that would have the belt wrap 90 degrees or more around the water pump pulley? I just can't see it... it is not a serpentine belt.

I can take pix of my sons 'cuda with those driven items: alt, WP and AC. We used a multigroove CF Racing crank pulley, and used a 2nd belt for the AC alone. It is an aluminum pulley, if that is OK with you.

Honestly I would buy a matched set of belts from Gates. You can actually buy a double belt (two belts molded to one single belt)
Used on big trucks and tractors. But you can order a matched set. Few bucks more but worth it. I will try the single belt for now.
Its the Nervous Nelly in me. Ill just carry a spare set of belts...just in case. They never break that way. LOL!
"secretly knocking on wood.)

I know all about matched belts, I used to sell them. In a previous life I worked for the largest auto parts/ industrial supply store here in town. We carried all sorts of belts and sheaves, bearings and sprockets for the lumber mills and the Silver Valley mines.

Bear in mind that the 70 RR I mentioned I used to drive HARD. It did not tear up belts. I will admit that the AC being "hang on" means that belt did not drive other components, so it had a nice big wrap around the pulleys

It uses a separate belt for the power steering. Just like the factory set up in the truck.
