Hi all, still truck shopping here. I found a NICE 86 Dodge with a slant. I'll let the ad give the details on it but my questions are...

Who has had a slant truck? How did you like it? What mileage can be expected with a 4 speed? (OD and non OD) And how are they for pulling? We don't have many BIG hills here's but can theses pull a 16' trailer and a car fairly easily? If I need more power I can always persuade more air intake using a certain whirligig contraption known as a turbo :supz:

Or would I be better off with this one?

the V8 truck all the way if you are going to be pulling a trailer. I had a 6 cyl. truck years ago and tried to pull a loaded car hauler and it was horrible. When hauling trailers you need some stable power. Granted I am in Colorado with some crazy steep mountain roads but even on flat land I would think the more power the better when pulling trailers.

The Lexington truck looks nice.....

I suppose towing wise, it would be pretty much a wash. During regular around town driving, I'd think the slant with the 4 gear would definitely get better mileage.

However, I'm a V8 guy, so if the "body work/ paint" needed on the Nashville truck is not too severe, I'd personally look at that one first.....plus the asking price is very reasonable in my opinion.

P.S. I should add that I would only look at a short bed truck for local/lower speed towing.

And I'd have to put some money in the slant truck as those bumpers would HAVE to go!!
By the time I'd get $4k in the v8 I could have a REALLY nice truck I'd think. What mileage could I expect outta the 2?

Ik! I love all 3!! Which ever I buy will be my daily driver (might buy a moped for spring-fall) and I drive 30 miles a day to work so I prefer to get fair mpg. Any body have an educated guess what i could expect from each?

Pangasket, what's your truck get for mileage?

Hands down the 1984 dodge ram 318 truck for good mpg and I would think it may even beat the /6 truck on the mpg, a good tune on the 318 will get up as much as 22/23 mpg.:glasses7:
as long as all the bearings are not holding you back, BUT the /6 could get about the same with a good tune, and with the granny low tran's (I think it will have) and the tall tires driven correctly on a flat high way driving with very little stops might surprise us all ;)
The 4x4 3/4 tun 360 is a work horse and about 14 mpg... I have drove many, and if it was me I would be all over the TEEN Truck for travel..

I had a /6 d150 86 with the 833 od and a 3.55 rear, it would not pull anything ,a 8'bed full of junk was too much. but when empty would get 28 mpg on highway' with the super six.

you will be lucky to see much over 10 on the 4x4

the 318 truck would be your best bet, but still is gonna get 14-16mpg.

My truck? its a bad benchmark. it needs a good tune badly. it gets maybe 10-11 is my guess. I stopped caring as I try to get the best I can out of it but I enjoy it alot more than anything else I have had the privilege to own and drive. I plan on eventually swapping to an A518 and I am getting a thermoquad very soon. Maybe I will see over 17 but I really doubt it.

I have had four slant six 2wd trucks.

One was a 3-speed, one bull-dog 4-speed, one auto, one over drive 4-speed.
Gears were between 3.55 and 3.91.
Gas milage in all of them was decent around 18 mpg, but tow or haul anything heavy and they could not get out there own way.

I am way happier with my current truck, it is a 318 4x4 bull dog 4-speed.
It averages around 14.5 mpg but it tows and hauls decent, and that is all I use it for.

I would seriously look at the black 4 x 4 one, that truck looks real nice.

Id like to find a /6 truck with manual steering. So I could borrow the manual steering box off of it...... :D

First truck has an A833-OD. Combined with a Slant 6, you will hate it. Most likely has 3.23 or 3.55 Gears. Hauling a load or towing something, you might get 8mpg.

Second Truck probably has a Lockup 727, and most likely 3.23 or 3.55 gears. It'll have more power, but lack a bit when towing/hauling. Expect 14 - 16mpg when empty, 10-12 towing/loaded.

Third Truck would be my choice. Definitely has a 727 and a Dana 44-HD Front Axle with a 9.25-HD Rear Axle, most likely 4.10 or 4.56 gears being a 3/4 Ton. Expect 12-14mpg Loaded or Unloaded, Town or Highway.

My '75 D300 Dumptruck has a 318, NP435 4-Speed and 4.88 Gears. Doesnt matter if it's empty, or hauling 4+ Ton, it gets 14mpg consistently.

back about 2001 i found a long bed 1/2 ton 2wd slant 4 OD, strait, no rust, black red int, low mi, seems like 86 or 7, the last yr for the slant, the PO had installed water injection for ?? i pulled it off. don't know the gear, pulled 18 car trailer with b bodies usually, mild mo hills, went down rd fair, but getting it rolling!!! aways figured i would burn up the clutch but didn't.have no idea of the gears or mileage, gas was lot cheaper back then, the i got 91 3/4 360 auto 2 wd long bed low miles, good power 10-12 mpg. sold it couple years ago couldn't afford gas for it!!! no idea of the gears... thennnnn, i got divorce and got the 95 1 ton cummins that we bought new > LOL 4;10 gears 18 and 13 empty or pulling, still got it, 165,000! HA.... if ya gonna do much pulling i would stay away from the slant. i had a 76, nice truck (short bed ) little red express truck bout early nineties, gave $1000 for it, needed nothin! got 15 mpg could not beleive it. course in early nineties good runnin 69 (383) roadrunner could be had for $1500! but those are anothe r story. sad but true!
