new to small blocks, are they like big blocks with the engine size casted on the block? bought a 69 dart for my daughter to get her into racing next year the car came with an unknown condition engine and was told it was a 318. thanks for any input

Look for the 318 casting on the driver side & the stamped number below the driver head mounting surface on the front of the block also.

well it turns out to be a 79 360, I'm a big block guy is there any value in this as a core engine?

It is the biggest small block made by Chrysler. You’ll make peak power a few hundred rpms before a 340 with very comparable HP.

There are many builds listed at the top of the racers forum in the sticky section listed in ET track times.
Stock stroke builds, strokers, big and small blocks are in each of the sections.

That's a lousy thing to say.....and of no value.

Jeff
Not really, 360 base will cost the same or less than a teen to build and make more power.
If it makes you feel better my next build is a teen for a drag car.

Relax, the days of everyone putting the 318 down is long gone.
The op should just be happy there was more cubes than expected:)

It could easily go 9's if he wanted it to and had the chassis to do it.

9s and easy in the same sentence, you sir just stretched the truth more than alitle.

teener can be a lot of (low budget) fun, with just a cam change, dual exhaust, and a little more carb. Used 360 intake, etc. Hard to believe they are the "same basic engine" with just some backyard junk

I honestly don’t see the interest in a 318 when there are 360’s out there so cheap. If someone called me and offered me 50.00 to come pick up a 318 and haul it away for them I wouldn’t do it.

It's not that hard. Decent heads and a well tuned chassis. It takes about 600 HP to get a 3000 pound car in the 9's. W-2's can do that falling off a log. Hell, a set of well prepped Edelbrocks will do it.

If it was that easy everybody would be doing it but that is Not the case. It is easier said then actually done.

We have a guy at our track that says his 318 will run 9s no problem. Best we’ve seen is a 10.62. He has slowed it down to 11.00 to save it so it will last longer. His claim is its easier on parts. He says it dynoe’d over 700 hp. But he forgot to tell us it’s a 390 stroker. Kim
