i've found a junk yard with a few early 8 3/4 rears with the 4 in bolt pat. i'm wondering if an aftermarket axel is out there that would give me thw 4 1/2 bolt pattern with only a drum swap?

Check out Moser, Yukon, etc. BTW: If you can get the rearends for a good price, I would highly suggest picking them all up. BTW: You are going to be looking at drums and backing plates unless you decide to drill your originals out for BBP. You can also drill the original SBP axle flanges for BBP too if you are on a budget.

I agree, get as many of them as you can. My tight a$$ would just take the axles and drums to a machine shop and have them drilled to the 4 1/2 bolt pattern. But if you intend to race or high HP, spend the money and get new axles for the rear.

I just did the swap. I bought yukon axles, green bearings and studs installed, drums, shoes, hardware, cylinders, backing plates and ready to bolt on for 697.00 delivered. If your interested I can put you in touch with the guy. Tod

the yard told me he has every thing from a one wheel wonder to a 4:10 pos. from $100 to $800. this yard tas been around sense the 50's and i've saw a few of the rears. i've priced rears on the web they range from $2000 to$4500 BIG BUCKS for a little guy like me!!!!!:-D

guys i was wondering if you could tell me if there is a way to ID a 8 3/4 rears gear and if its a posi with out taking the thing apart? junk yard shopping can be tricky!!!! if you know what i mean!!!

On the center section housing (pig) directly below the pinion you'll find a casting number which will end in either 741 or 742 or 489, these are all good rears. If it ends in 657 you don't want it. The quickest way to tell if it's got a sure grip (posi) is turn one axle and if the other axle is turning the same direction then it's a sure grip, if turns in the other it's open. Gear ratio is turn the pinion and count how many revolutions it turns when the axles turn 1 revolution, eg. if the pinion turns 3 1/2 turns to one turn of the axle it's a 3.55 to 1 ratio.

Sometimes they'll have a tag on one of the mounting bolts with the gear ratio. Otherwise, do like Demonseed said. Why don't you get a list of what he's got and post it here, that is if you're willing to be a middleman. I'm looking for a 3.55. Prefer suregrip, but it's not a deal breaker.

Be careful on the turning the one wheel deal. If the spiders are gunked up good, both will turn the same direction.

Easier to check with two people. One person holds, the other spins.

i'll be able to get to this yard in a week or two then i will post what i find. thanks for the great help guys!!!!!8)

just out of curiousity where is this hidden gem yard located?

i didn't say the "rears" were 8 3/4 these were ford 9's and dana 60's most wouldn't even really try to talk to me about building me a 8 3/4. said thay a x brand would be better and the 8 3/4 was a weak rear for a 500 HP motor!!!!

I tried a couple of machine shops locally. One would use a CNC's and quoted me $125 on for the axles and drums....until he saw what meat would be left over on the axles. Even using screw in studs he wouldn't touch it. Another place would do it, on manual machines and wanted around $400. I ended up ordering sbp steel wheels for around $300. Last night while looking on Summit, I came upon this for 8 3/4 rear ends. Disc brake conversion and lbp for $450. Wish I had seen this (or if they even had this) a couple of years ago.

Just looked at it again, I wonder if the axles need to be lbp, but it they are specifically for 65 to 72 A bodies

yes the axles would need to be LBP , the LBP axle has a different offset from the bearing than the SBP axle

They need to get out of the business an 8 3/4 properly built(thats probably the problem they don't know how to build one) can handle 500 plus h.p. no problem....

i really believe that a 8 3/4 is a very strong rear and can handle even a wheel standing duster!!! so i will be buying the mopar 8 3/4 rear save the bucks and the other "builders can kiss my @#!*!!!!!!!" any questions guys?

yea buy one for me and i will pay you in may when i go down to radford university for my sisters graduation and i will give you the money

that summit link for the disc brake conversion listed above. Will that work for my 75 scamp? It only lists to a 72 so im not aware if they changed anything or not.

Thanks,
Joe
