Snowmobiling blues...

Went a little different direction then I started out today. I finished the main design work for the deck and got all the metal cut and prep'ed. Hopefully I'll be able to post some more complete pictures tomorrow.

Looks good! I haul 4 sleds around and use a 24' enclosed car hauler to do it. That deck looks nice and simple. And it wouldn't take up the whole driveway when not in use!

No more trailer tires and no more pulling into places like I have an 18-wheeler just pull into a spot jump out and get my snacks and leave.

At least I went from an open trailer to an enclosed, so there are benefits to that.

All of the snow around here is definitely Mountain Travel every time. At least an hour drive or more into the mountains from sea level. So everything is a 5000 to 6000 to 7000 foot climb or more. I don't have a diesel and don't have a desire for one so I really try to stay away from too much weight. Even with a diesel it just is one hell of a lot more dangerous with a lot more weight going up and especially down Hills/mountains. I did go from a two-place trailer open to a closed two place trailer but again it just seems like too much weight to pull up and down for two snowmobiles so I went back to an ultra-light aluminum open trailer. I have had that for the last 4 years or so and it's served me very well but again changing those little golf cart tires in the snowy Tundra and it happens once every other year even if I keep a good eye on the tires. Then of course the snowmobiles are covered in crap thrown up by the truck when we get there. And I'm always looking back at that thing in the dark swinging around waiting for the tire to blow or something. and now instead of having the weight to pull up the hill I'll have the weight in the back of the truck for more traction. Same coming down.

I have to say, I prefer larger trailers to smaller ones. My first trailer was a 2 place open trailer and it was sketchy as hell. I do have a crew cab Cummins Dodge and it's pretty flat between here and my cabin. I do agree though, Trailers and Mountains are not something I really look forward to!

I think I would have been done a long time ago had I just an open budget to buy all the steel and supplies I needed. As it is though I have to think I had quite a bit and Design around the materials available. Even those chains are repurposed tire chains. I have a couple tables that I got from a metal place an old trailer I robbed metal out of that was abandoned at the end of my block LOL and of course a few hundred dollars in materials that I couldn't do without.

Damn you, since I replied to this thread and gave you that image I am getting bombarded with Ski-doo ads...LOL!

Funkin Google algorithms.

Heres what i build. Intended to maintain the ford backup camera.
Fleet doesent want tailgates removed.

More progress today. Nothing really to show in pictures. Just a lot more welding and grinding. I also got the 4 by 8 sheets of plywood notched and drilled. Now I just need to wash it and paint. Then I can screw the plywood on and start dressing the plywood up. I'll need to put Runners for the skis which I'll make out of a bedliner I got from Craigslist for free. And I'll make cross hatches for the track to get traction. Also I need to make hold down attachments for the sleds.
damn it my cheap Harbor Freight gloves or trying to give out and sending hot marbles into my left hand! I made my repairs and kept moving LOL

Of course my sled deck is completely untested! I have no idea what's going to happen if my ramps going to be strong enough if everything is going to go crumbling down? LOL
did you have any trial and error or did you just go over kill right out of the gate? I just don't want to make this thing too damn heavy.

The ramp is 2x3/4” light wall square tubing. Holds up yamaha venture fully loaded with the nro gear.
750 lbs easy.
And its light. They add glides for the carbides and fasten cleats for the track.
Skis clear the deck, some need a riser on the gate for longtracks to slide ramp in/out.

For screwing the plywood on, i use wafer screws. And pilot drill.
They are tough screws. Just need to get drill bit right.

I went to the store and just bought bolts and nuts and washers and I took an old G-Force belt loop and put the Bolt & Nut through that and clamped it down into the corners so I could weld the nuts into the framing. I put one in each corner and one in the middle of each piece of plywood. The plywood is already locked in by the surrounding supports and the snowmobiles will be held down to

attachments that will go through the plywood to the frame anyways. If I can detach the plywood quickly and easily and pulled the ramp out all the way easily the frame is still light enough for me to get out and maneuver by myself. It's heavy but manageable.

Looking good Frosty ! I have the jet ski in the shop waiting for summer. It's going to be a long six months. lol

I'm using two by one medium wall for most of it and I have two eight Footers for the ramp and some light wall 2 by 2 angle iron left over from the dovetail and cut into 4 foot pieces for cross pieces.
I'm assuming having it up on Edge would make it stronger than laying it flat underneath the plywood for the ramp?

you just crossed over 10,000 posts you did...….
