I made my first ever pass on a track in the 68 340 fish I bot almost a year ago. Car was doing 8.60's on some old Cooper Cobra 255/60 street tires. Was slipping badly at the line. So after about 4 passes the car is getting slow to crank over. Had to jump it to get back on the trailer. Found the problem next day - the wire to the alternator was off the post. Fixed that and next week was running 8.80. Same the next week (remember the wheel spin?) so I put on a set of M&H 275/60 drag radials and went back to the track. Ran 8.73-80 again. So it was experiment time. off comes the race weight 6 pk hood to see if I needed fresh air to the carb. Nope, no change. Then I unhooked the alternator fireld wire and my 8.60 is back!

Darn alternator is expensive time wise. Now have a switch above the volt meter that I can turn off when I get to the line.

Yup. run an electric water pump off the battery too and pick up another .***

Have a elec water pump already, fan too. That alternator must be sucking about 20? HP to slow the car down that much. I wouldn't have thunk it would be such a drag.

I wonder how much drag the car has with that big open grill. Must hurt MPH a bunch. Maybe experiment with foam blocks cut to fit in the fish grill to block air...

BTW, used to live in Tustin until I got out of Foothill HS in 73. Was up in the hille near Saddleback park (Peters Canyon).

We walk Peters canyon about once a month, still there. I saw a guy at the track attach 2 sheet aluminum panels to dsutz(?) fasteners coming out of his front end on a 74 Dart. It has that pointed grill so these panels made the front end like a smooth pointed brick. It had a small hole dead center about the size of a baseball. Dont know if it would pass inspection or made the car any faster but it made it look like he meant business...long time ago, only reason I remembered it was because you brought that idea up.

Used to be able to ride my dirt bike or the sister's horse down our back bank down to the creek in Peters Canyon. That was before houses got built there - back in 1970-1973. Al3ways had to dodge the "Irvine patrol" and their black/white ford broncos.

Yeah, I think the fish would look OK with some kind of blackage in the grills but may be better putting it behind the grill so the car looks OK. No need to have all that air going through the grill on the track. A Dart I race has the grill blocked and the guy thinks I have not noticed it.
