spring pad cutting. maximum cut amount?

What's the safe maximum amount you can cut the spring pads on 596 heads? I need to cut .050 to get my installed heights right with a valve length of 5.00. Will this be ok? Still would like to know max about cut for future knowledge . Thanks

If foggy memory serves me right, .050 is the max cut, this is from the MP engine book. I did a pair of "J's" this far and found out later you come very close to water at this amount of cut. Have you tried off set retainers and keepers?
