I have a problem that has been driving me crazy. Maybe one of you guys out there can help me. My '71 demon 318 ran perfect up until a couple of weeks ago. Now at normal running temperature, it won't idle at a light. It starts stumbling and then it eventually stalls. I can start it as long as I've got the throttle down at about 1700 rpm. Eventually it doesn't want to run until I let it set for about an hour or so. Last night I put a new eddie 600cfm on it and it still does it. Is it vapor lock? I did notice that the glass fuel filter I just put in didn't have any gas in it when it stalled today. I even insulated my fuel line going into the fuel pump. Fuel pump seems like it's getting pretty hot. carb seems hot too. In fact after it dies, if I throttle it at the carb, the gas smokes/vaporizes a bit when it touches the throat. The engine runs like a champ until after about 10 minutes of city driving. Any help would be amazing.

Well I had a Carter on it before. It started doing it so I switched to a stock pump and it still did it.

Check ur that lines r clear, make sue the cap is vented, see if it does it with the fuel cap off. How hot is the engine getting on the gauge, if it works?
After that simple stuff, check timing.

What ignition r u running? points or electronic?

That was my first thought also wild, maybe a older tank with some trash in it. But if he's getting enough fuel to restart using more throttle there must be fuel getting to the bowl.

I think your on to something with the ignition.....if you've got high heat conditions underhood a weak or failing coil might be the culprit after it heat soaks?

Hmmmm...now that you mention it, I did replace the coil with an Accel Super Stock shortly before I noticed any problems. I am running a MP electronic ignition w/ the orange box w/ MSD 8mm wires. Should I throw the old coil back on and see what happens?

That would be an inexpensive test, and couldn't hurt. Lots of times cars will run bad after someone does some work on them, and the culprit is the last thing they did.

Mine is having the same issue and now that I've worked on the carb it seems my Accel coil is causing this fail. My 383 truck had the same issue when the coil killed over. The Accels I've had all failed quickly. Black factory Mopar ones do perfect.

That did it! Took the Accel off, put the black Mopar one back on and bingo!
I got the motor up to temperature in my driveway, and like clockwork after about 15 minutes of idling it died. I then quickly took the Accel coil off and put the mopar one back on and it fired right up and purred like a kitten. This has been driving me crazy for about a week now. I didn't even think about the coil. Thanks everyone and especially OldManRick. FABO is awesome!

...exactly the same thing happened to me over the last month....swapped in a Acell Super Coil, thing started to fail at idle at stop lights (or in the middle of the intersection..) when hot....replaced a few parts, finally thought..."well maybe it IS the coil"...swapped in the stock coil....all fixed....:blob:
