I have a 74 225 1-bbl. Im having trouble when the car sits for a day or more. It just runs for a second or two( runs off the fuel in the bowl) Then it won't start just turns over. It acts like the fuel drains back to the tank. If i spray carb cleaner in it it fires right up and runs long enough for the fuel pump to catch up. When i start it every day its fine, it also rund fine when warm. What can i do to stop this? Thanks alot.
 
Its not uncommon to get pin holes in the fuel line, hoses, or even the diaphragm. Check your oil for gas or gas smell. For $25 or less you can install a fuel pump. Our new ethonal gas eats rubber so make sure you have Fuel injection/EFI rated lines.

Thanks for the reply, ive already replaced the fuel pump, it was leaking into the crankcase. I need to check the fuel lines, i know i have some trash in the tank i have to replace the fuel filter every 3-4 months or so, do you think this could be related?
 
What we call fuel today evaporates right out of the bowl vent.
I'm guessing you pump the throttle before attempting start.
That would give you a short run from the fuel in the accelerater pump which doesn't evaporate so easily.
Afterwards the fuel pump would need to fill both the bowl and the acc. pump cavity.
 
Yep, junky gas. If I don't drive my car for a few days I have to pump the throttle a few times before I start it.
 
Thanks guys, yes i do pump the throttle before starting. It turns over excessive before starting or sometimes it will run the battery all the way down if i let it. Thats with me pumping it and only turning it over for a few seconds at a time. This morning it sat for a day, i pumped it once, turned over fired right up, i feathered the trhottlr and it kept running fine! So i don't know, its possessed. Then when i got to work and shut it off, tried to restart and the battery was dead, its always something with this P.O.S.!!!!
