STEERING COLUMN ID. QUESTION

Hi Folks

This is a steering column from a '71 floor shift Auto Demon (power steering). I have a couple of these shafts and they all have the same set-up at the bottom of the shaft tube. Is there some sort of bushing that is supposed to be there? I find it strange that all 3 of my columns are the same.

I have seen the bearing upgrade in the sticky section, but wanted to leave it original.

Any pics of what they are supposed to look like would be helpful.

That’s how they did it in 1970 also. You align the tube and shaft before bolting the firewall plate tight.
