Oops, I seemed to have collapsed the steering shaft in my column. Is it safe to full the shaft back apart ? Whats the correct length for an A body power steering shaft ?

You should pull it back to position and replace the plastic sheer pin/s. The finished length would be a open tolerence given the travel in the box coupling.

Need a new shaft, The other end is peened over so I cant get the nut on it. :angry5:

Seen that before too. Someone didn't use a steering wheel puller.
A thread file and some time will fix it. I bought one standard and one metric thread files off a tool truck long ago. Worth their weight in silver.

I pulled it apart, It had a Rim blow wheel on it so I didnt need a puller. I cant imagine how I mess it all up. Im gonna grab another column off of a friend for a few bucks and just swap the shaft out

Fixed it ! Now I just need to fix a few wires and its done ! Thanks

It's apparently easier to do this than one might think. I did it somehow too. Didn't realize I did it either because it didn't go in much. Just enough to shear the pins. I put the column in and it hooked up to the steering box ok. A few miles later the steering started binding on turns. Took it straight home very carefully and popped the hood and found the shaft had allmost backed out of the collar. The shoes were showing. That was a scary sight thinking I might have lost the steering.

i HAD my shoes come out of the coupling and had to get towed home. happened coming out of a parking lot. i just pulled the column back to the correct position, and instead of plastic shear pins, i used thin little copper nails. they will shear off too being as thin as they were.
