I'm in a situation where I lucked up and purchased a hydraulic roller 318 with the 302 casting heads for a decent price. I purchased the Comp Cams camshaft and lifters for another engine. Would you leave the stock roller setup as is or replace it with the XE262H?

Just because you have the roller cam block and parts to make it work I would keep the roller set up. Is the cam and lifters used or new? Save the hydraulic for your other project.(imo) If you look around at different cam companies there's some mild street roller cams available which should work great without getting exotic with the rest of the motor. tmm

The XE262H and lifters is new. The other block ('77 318) needed to go to the machine shop and was told it would be cheaper to grab another engine. Had a guy tell me that he would use the flat tappet setup. I will be using my 4-bbl setup and Mallory distributor.

Call a cam grinder like Tim at Bullet. He can regrind the stock hyd roller cam to something a little more aggressive.

It'll be a few weeks before I'll be able to purchase a cam or anything in that nature for the hydraulic roller engine. I'm a run it as is until I can get everything situated. I thought there may be a gain switching to the flat tappet and it being the highly favored XE262H.

IMO, stick with the roller cam set up, get a new roller cam and spring package, you'll be way ahead of the power game this way. Good advice below if your not to up on cam's.

:D I've already been looking at different companies and what they have to offer for the roller setup. I already have springs laying around when I do change cams.
