Stop in for a cup of coffee

P & G sandblasted and cleaned up my son's old alternator that looked pretty beat up and it looked brand new when they were done...

They have done great work for me so far...
I don't have a very big compressor but I would love to have a smaller blast cabinet.

Can those alternators be converted to dual field?

I have a pile of the single field ones that I took off cars that I electronic ignition converted.

I convert them all because I don't fiddle with points

You can run electronic ignition with single field or dual feed alternators...

It's the voltage regulator that determines if you need a single or dual field alternator... Electronic voltage regulator (later style) vs solid state (early style)...

I can tell whenever you post because I get a glimpse of one cherry *** 66 dart. Even when I wasn't into early A's, I always liked that car. Red suits it so good and it just has a clean and innocent personality for a car.
Thanks Rani,
My avatar was my 74 Dart for awhile...

If you have a dual field and only need a single, I've seen where they ground the extra field terminal...
Yea. That's easy.
This one I picked up from a small yard after one of the ones pictured above seized on my weekly commute.
It's "two field" round back. We simply added a jumper to ground. Its the one I just put back on the car.
These are somewhat valuable if date codes are still visible. This one is decent.

This is a revised squareback from Tuff Stuff.

Just pulled it off the car. Has a terrible squeal. Always has. Seems to be the brushes against slip ring. I'm going to try cleaning them up.

This squareback had to be done differently since I didn't have crimpers, ring terminals etc with me.
Instead I removed the insulating washers so the brush would ground.

On all of these one brush goes in sideways and the other straight down.
Here's the insulated slip rings. You can see the connection from the outer slip ring to the windings.
The cup on the end is to control grease from the rear bearing. I notice a lot of rebuilds don't have these. :(

I think those have to be pressed on with the rotor out. I (We at the parts store) WENT THROUGH A HALF A DOZEN ROUNDBACKS BEFORE I got the single groove pulley I needed. Damn tablet keyboard.
They're getting rare, even the standard 2.5" (2.7 OD).
Mancini is selling an aftermarket one.
WAI sells an aftermarket one as well. I bought one. It's a fricken anchor. A full 1 pound on the postal scale. Original is under 8 oz.

Oh, and no cheap cabinet has. Good gun. Spend $50 or more and it will work better and save air. I also use glass beads, also a nicer finish.

Yup. At first the solid state versions of the pre 1970 regulator (one field brush grounded) were offered by mopar performance. Those don't look like the originals, but work the same. Now its prob rare to buy a parts store regulator that has the points no matter what it looks like.

When I see new alternator parts for sale now, most are WAI / Transpo made you know where. Quality could be anywhere.
Maybe some rebuilders have a few other sources. But at least one that can rewind has more options, and almost certainly has experience with what will work out in the long run.
There’s an older guy here that still does. He’s a great rebuilder and has rebuilt many an electric item for me, motors, alternators etc. trust the dude with even the rarest of parts. He does rewinding too.

There is a catch though, dude is a bad alcoholic. Not in a mean way or anything, just drinks a ton and doesn’t know when to stop. He’s been arrested more times than I can count for DUI. So he’s in jail a lot. But he’s stopped driving after they told him if he’s caught again, it’s a 20 year sentence

Not much. The antibiotic is beating down the abscess, but the pain is still pretty bad.

I am just taking it one day at a time and trying to cope.
Sorry to hear. That's brutal.
Can you use a local numbing agent?
