Didnt factory exhaust use studs in the front and rear holes so you didn't
have to drain the coolant to work on them?

Doing headers and thinking I will make some stainless ones for mine.

Thats what I was thinking from memory. I'm changing out my headers
(lots of fun and self abuse there) and thought it would be a good time to
put studs back in for gasket repairs etc later on. Hate draining coolant!

I have found that the A body cars have limited amount of room and the studs hinder the headers when coming off the head.

I was thinking that also, got I hate headers but what's a guy to do.
manifolds also have their own downfall.

The headers I installed on my e body in 1981 are still in good shape today,
I guess I can take comfort in knowing once they are done, I wont
bottom out on everything and it's hopefully done for good!

What do you guys use for sealant? Permatex II or silicone?

No sealent on exhaust gaskets needed.

What headers did you use on your E-body?

No, no I meant on the threads.

I used crap ol headman headers and I can't believe they held up as long
as they have! Hope these Doug's are at least as good, but from looking at
the construction, I'm sure they will be.

Teflon tape around 3 times.

Those headers have 3 tubes hanging low, under the steering linkage. Hate them, allways get banged up.
I used the Hooker Super Comp. headers @ 1-3/4 and no tubes under the steering linkage. The only issue was the scatter sheild. Needed to dent the header for fitment. Next time, it's a sazall to the scattersheild on the E body Cuda.

I got the "easy side" put up on my dart last night, just about killed me.
The one tube is about 1/16 from the inner fender, and about 1/8" from the
torsion bar. Might get interesting when I go to put larger bars in....
I can't wait to start working on the drivers side and Z bar this weekend.....

We having fun yet? I'm getting too old for this kind of work lol.

I here that. I got a set of TTI's I still need to install but I just don't think I am ready for all that fun yet. LOL

Good luck to you. Hope they fall right in for you.

If studs interfear with header R&R would slotting those holes in the header flange be an option ? Would you slot them up or down ?

I didn't have the time to think about it, just to easy to remove them. Even more so since I had just screwed them in, they were easy to take out.

I guess if you did slot the header flange, it would be easy. Though installing the header with the studs was a pain to impossible. This is where I discovered the problem, in doing so. On the Duster I have now.

I guess it seems like studs could work now, but I have to remember I don't
have an oil filter on yet, AND the cross bar and idler arm is of.

I decided to just use aluminum header gaskets and hopefully call it done.
They can't leak nearly as bad as the ones on the hooker smashed up headers
that were on there.

McMaster Carr has some stainless steel studs that will screw right
in and are stainless steel. Two bucks each and the length is perfect
for Doug's headers or any other with a 3/8" flange.

Part number is 92997A332
