I started the 340 after sitting for a couple months to move it to the other side of the shop. when I started it it had a very pronounced ticking in the motor. I moved it from one side of the shop to the other and left it. It was cold and I was hoping that might be it. Today, I warmed the shop up and put an electric heater on the pan to get the motor a little warm. Started it up and it's still there. It wasn't there when I parked it last fall and it is a fresh rebuild.....any ideas?

my guess would be a collapsed lifter which will take a little bit of run time to clear the air out of. oil pressure good?

yes, oil pressure is good....i checked that right away.

Sometimes the lifters in my 78 chebby truck will make a ticking sound untill it warms up, sometimes I have to shut off the truck and restart it and the ticking will go away. Just have to wait for the oil to get into the lifters after it's been sitting.

how long did it run? Was the oil hot? Did you break in the cam? Had that same problem on the 451 I built for challenger ended up replacing the lifters. hyd stick correct?

Freshayr, i have the same problem. The ticking is pronounced when cold and goes away within 5 minutes of runing. What would cause the lifters to bleed down and how do you recognise a damaged lifter when inspecting?

The springs force the oil back out of the lifters when it sits long term..Normally, a lifter pumps right back up when re-started after a sit...But sometimes they stick a little. Let it warm up, and rev it a little (3-4K) once or twice..it should go away. If it doesnt, you can tell the bad one by the loose pushrod.

ditto

The cam was broke in by the engine rebuilder on a dyno. Other than that it doesn't have 5 miles on the motor. I have started it a couple times just to move it from one bay of the shop to the other. I guess I will try bringing it up to operating temp.

I had the same problem, and even when warmed up, you could tell it was collapsing,it even lost some power on the top end.
