I currently have Accurate Exhuast ACMT-912 A body performance mufflers. They have a nice muscle car sound and not too loud but they drone badly on my 67 GTS. I need to change them to a muffler that won't drone on the car. 2.25" from to back with stock exhaust manifold. I just want to change the mufflers. I wasn't considering any cross pipe install. I've read a number of the posts on mufflers and have a idea of what I might do but suggestions for my specific setup would be helpful.

I added a 8" long cherrybomb in front of the dual 3" flow 40's and it greatly reduced the raspyness of the sound. My exhaust is pointed down and out at the rear end. Sounds like 4 harleys coming in as I downshift going into a bar parking lot. Pisses off the bikers cause they all have to look upo to see whi is riding in and it is just an old Mopar. LOL.

Walker dynomax super turbos got them on my dad 440 68 charger for 20 yrs still sound great. Plan on buyin a new set for my dart.
Little to no drone and are fairly loud especially when you nail the skinny pedal.

If you want quiet,go to Sears.

If you want performance with less drone,go for a straight through design, like a Dynomax or Magnaflow muffler. Super turbos will be more quiet,at the expense of HP (they are not straight through).
If all out HP isnt an issue, than these will be good.
But if you don't want to lose any HP,check out a set of Dynomax ultraflows or Magnaflow. They do not have the droan of a chambered (Flowmaster)muffler.

The dynomax super turbos on my dart had no drone.

The dynomax super turbos on my buddies challenger drone like mad. It annoys me when I'm in my car behind him.

        I have headers and a x-pipe

He has manifolds and a H-pipe

On the straight thru subject has anyone tried the Cherry Bomb Vortex muffler on a dart with iron manifolds and no cross connection?

Chamber muffs tend to drone from what I have read. A turbo muff is an option since I think I used this type years ago after an engine change from stock made the glass packs that were on there at the time too loud. It still sounded good but toned it down. Seems to me it still had some drone but not as bad as what I have now which can really resonate in your head.

The sound clip on the web site for the dynomax Ultraflow sounds like it controls the sound level pretty good and has a nice low rubble. The Cherry Bomb Vortex sounds like it has a higher pitch and may be louder. I wouldn't mind a straight thru design as long as it wasn't too loud. Hate to trade off no drone for louder all the time.

I hunted up some sound clips on line of Magnaflows on older muscle cars. It seems to do a pretty good job of keeping the sound level from getting too loud and has a nice low rubble. I guess these oval straight thru designs are much better at controlling the sound level than the bullet glass packs that I remember.

          Dynomax Super Turbo Airflow 70%
          Dynomax Ultra Flow Airflow 99%

          Sound decibel at 3500rpm:
          Super Turbo 88
          Ultra Flow 91

As you can see,the Ultra Flow is a touch louder, but out flows the Super Turbo by far. Ultra Flows cost alot more, but it is a much better choice for performance. The straight through design is just what your looking for.

I've been running 40 series Flowmasters. Love the sound of Flowmasters, and yes they can droan.
But after looking at some flow charts,I'm afraid I've bought my last set of them.
It will be between Magnaflow or Dynomax on the next set.

Don't how useful this muffler sound test is but it is a comparison of some use I guess. They just slipped different mufflers on a single exhaust under the car for you to hear [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxR6SSAud04"]Chevy Truck 350 CID muffler sounds - YouTube[/ame] .

I believe the mustle cars, from the factory, had resonators with mufflers to create that exhaust note.

My 67 GTS Dart only has/had mufflers. Even the stock engine with stock mufflers had a low level drone but not one that resonated in you head.

Thanks for eveyones input. I ordered the Magnaflows from Advance Auto Parts and took advantage of the 20% off and free shipping. I can post how they sound after I get them installed.

Magnaflows are very similar in design to the Dynomax Ultraflows. I've used both to good effect.

I currently have the ultraflows on my car and everyone at the track is always telling me how quiet my car is. haha.

Hopefully the new muffs will help with the drone problem. Which is the main reason I'm changing the mufflers. It's bad. Besides resonating your head you can feel it in the seat, gear shift and the steering wheel. I suppose while it's droning the other drivers know I'm there. :tonqe:

No drone here with Magnaflows on my dart. Idle is a good tone level. What I don’t care for is the acceleration tone is a little low. Its kind of like the car quiets down from idle into the lower RPMs at moderate take off until I press the pedal more to bring on the revs faster. Typical driving in the cab I tend to hear the motor revving up over the tone coming out the exhaust. But they are good sounding muffler. I just posted a idle clip link in the sound bite thread sticky.

I got the Magnaflows on Monday and the band clamps yesterday. So I'm planning on putting them in this weekend. We'll see if the dreaded drone will be gone.

I read somewhere that was a common problem with the baffles. I believe they have claimed to resolve the issue also with tight clearances in manufacturing. But on the other hand the more moving parts always means more to go possibly wrong.
