So I have a rear end from a 63 dart 3.23 gears and want to put it in my 72 valiant . I know the 63 rear end has 9 inch brakes and I have 10 inch . Would I be able to swap no problem? Not sure how to remove the backing plates. Anyone got suggestions? Thanks in advance I appreciate the help moparians :D:burnout:

Depends. Are they both the same rear? I'm assuming the 63 rear is a 7 1/4. If the 72 rear is also a 7 1/4 (same rear cover) the backing plates should swap. To remove the backing plates you have to remove the four nuts behind the axle, thru the access hole in each axle then pull the axle out. the backing plate is just sitting on the studs at this time and will come off after you disconnect the E-brake and brake line. You will probably need a axle puller to remove the axles. I'm sure someone else will chime in if parts will change from a rear as old as the 63.

Alright sounds good I'm cleaning/ prepping the new rear end getting ready for the swap . Thanks for the help 340doc!

I believe the tracks are different.

Nope the tracks are both the same at 55.56, and the perches are also the same, but the flange to flange is different. There's almost 2 extra inches in the 72. I'm assuming that's to allow room for the bigger brakes.
As long as you are swapping the entire rear end, compete, it should be a direct fit.
Alternatively, you could swap the gears from the 63 into the 72, but that requires some expertise.

I'm almost doing a complete swap. I just would like to have my 10 inch drums on the rearend that has 9inch drums...I guess that should of been my question lol... Would I be able to put the 10 inch brakes on the r.end with the 9 inch brakes? Thanks for the input!

Oh and when I remove the axles I want to replace the bearings while I'm at it.. Does removing and installing the rear bearing require a special tool?

The bearings are on the axle and have to be pressed off and on. AJ/FormS, what do you mean the flange to flange is different if they have the same track?

I'm not sure about that. I removed an axle from a 7 1/4 with the 10" brakes and swapped it with one in a 7 1/4 with the 9" brakes.
