I'm looking to convert my slant 6 to automatic. The engine and transmission came out of a 1978 dodge d100 and is in a 53 dodge truck. The trans is a A390 I think and is a granny shifter. My main question is how do I adjust the kickdown linkage and is a 2 barrel kickdown linkage different from a single.

kickdown linkage is different, between 1 and 2 bbl carbs. There is also a difference in the lever on the trans. The easiest way is to use a cable setup. Here is a link to several on e-bay.

Simple explanation:
When the throttle starts to open, the arm on the transmission starts to move. That's how it knows when to shift.
There normally is one long "throttle rod" connecting the carb to the trans on a truck/van. Cars use 2 rods with a pivot in the middle due to lack of room.
How does it connect? Same way it comes off. There's adjustability at the trans. If you have it too slack it'll shift too soft and too early. Too tight and it delays the shifts. Trial and error my friend.
The service manual has the complete procedure in it but nobody has any interest in buying one.
