Hi guys,

Im trying to figure out my RPM, gas mileage issues and some of the suggestions where to run a taller tire. What is the tallest tire that will fit on the rear of a 71 Scamp? Can we squeeze a 28", 29" etc.... in the opening?

I believe 9.25" wide is the widest that will fit, but I would like to find wide and tall.

28" prob. Take a tape from the center of the hub to the front of the wheel well, multiply by 2.

Running a 275/60/15 drag radial(27" tall),on a 15 by 8 /4.5 back spacing.(mopar bolt in offset hangars). Hope this helps (72 Scamp).

Just threw that size into the calculator and its showing 28" tall and 10" wide. I dont have the offset hangers so I would have to stick with the narrower tire.

Ive been on there looking at different tires all day, but that dont do any good if I cant figure out what will fit in there. Unless Im missing something on that site.

different tires have different section widths , I just bought a pair of Nitto 275/60/15s for my car and they have a section width of 11" according to vendor , hoosier makes a 28x9.5 in a street compound and I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find something close to that .

Can anyone confirm that a 28" will for sure fit?

You ever dig into it. I have measured a few times and man it would be awfully close. At this point Im going to have to find a used 275/60-15 just to test fit it.I also may just pop for 275/60-15 nittos. I believe they run smaller at 27-3/4".

I havent picked up a set of tires yet, but like you stated it is awfully close to the rocker in front of the rear wheel. I spent some time measuring and after all of that, I think Im going to go with the offset spring hangers to get a little wider tire and probably go with that size and brand that you mentioned. If you get a used tire before I do and get a chance to test fit it post here and let me know. Im hoping to find something real soon!

No need to buy a test tire. Go to "tirerack.com" find the drawing where you figure out tire dimensions. Lay out the dimensions on a steel plate and weld the plate to an old junk rim. Bolt in place and rotate with a jack under the pumpkin and some weight in the trunk.

What gears you running ? With 28 tire and 2.76 or 3.23 it will be a dog in the city , good on the highway though . You do mostly city or highway ?

Clarification to my earlier post...

If your 'junk' wheel has a different backspacing than your 'Summit' wheel and/or the wheel width is different, be sure to move the plate to the proper side by a distance equal to the difference between the center of each wheel when mounted to the axle so that your plate accurately represents the location in the wheel well.

Im running 3:73, trying to get my RPMs down do help with the gas milage. Hence why Im looking to go to a taller tire. My car only comes out on weekends, and its a mix of city and hwy.

I can understand that , with 25" tires 3500 rpm @69 mph 28" 3100 rpm @69 . Should help .

I run 275/60/15 rear tires on the back of my 68 Dart, The 28" tall will fit but it's really close to the rocker on my car. The drivers side probably 1/4", passenger side has close to 1/2" gotta love the factory tolerances. You could always space the springs back a little if they were to close for comfort.

you might be able to find some junk tire at a tire shop, just for fitment purposes. Im sure they would just give you a tire that has little to no tread on it. Another place would be at the drag strip, ask some racers if they have any old tires that they might give away cause theyre worn out. Too bad you don't have a duster, lotso room under them quarter panels.

Im pushing for a 28" tire for the same reason. 3:73 here as well. I turn 3000rpms getting it up to 55mph with 25.5" tires and 3800 stall. Hope to help that out a little.

I had already went ahead and purchsed (1) 275/60-15 Nitto from Summit to use for test fit. If it doesnt fit I'll simple send it back. Im not to worried about the front edge hitting. Like mentioned Ill move the spring bracket back a 1/4" if need. Im more worried about the width you gain trying to get the 28"s. 275 is going to be tight in the factory wells with the damn leaf springs in closer than the frame. Another Dodge fail.

It actually came tonight. So come morning Ill be test fitting it. Ill try and get good picks on all the angles for ya. Ive only got the tire by itself so Im going to try and center it best I can and see whats close to hitting. take note these are nitto 275/60-15's They are said to measure out at only 27.75" tall.

Holy tire Batman. This is a tight fit. I still dont know if its going to fit but I think I may give it a try. It is really close to the fender but I think I maybe able to trim it enough to gain clearance. The springs are tight as well but as long as I can get the right backspace to not touch they should not be a problem since they dont movewith suspension travel. The front of the fender has about an 1/4" if that between the tire with these nittos but it will clear that for sure. now it just trying to avoid other areas from rubbing.
