I just purchased this TCI trans (pn. 890-112000)
Rev Man valve body, 4.2 lever, steel planetaries
    5 disk sets etc
anyone out there unhappy with this unit?
anything I should be aware of?
    I want to put in a 5000 s/s convertor
for a couple hundred miles a year street
and occasional drags. Motor is 550 HP 440
    in a 3100# 72 Duster with 456 gears

NOW you tell me!! I don't have 550hp but I do have an 8" conv with roughly that stall speed behind my 408. My planned usage is about the same as @Zachow Duster. We'll find out how it works in a few months!

5k is even high for the strip; unless you're shift completes at over 5k. That's okay, just shift at 8k and you'll be just fine.

I rebuilt a C4 for a guy one time. He called and said it didn't work; wouldn't even move. He said he revved it and nothing. Had a new torque converter he bought off a buddy... So he brings the trans back along with the converter. I said where's the converter? He picks it up out of his trunk with one hand; like an 8" donut...5k stall...His old worn out 302 two barrel couldn't even rev high enough to hit stall.

If his car wouldn't move at all , it wasn't because it was 5000 stall. It was either broken/defective or he was low on fluid.

What rpm do you think a 5k stall should engage?

5k convertor is fine on the street just don't idle in gear for a long time. Used 5000 and 5500 on the street for over 45 years and 0 problems. Just don't overheat, use a extra cooler, keep the fluid changed and a trans temp gauge. You'll love it! ps do not do burn outs in first gear!!!!

5000 stall on the street is fine for the right combo.
            for a 440 with 4.56 gears it's overkill. I'd cut it back 500- 800 rpm. 4200 stall would be a better bet.

My 4500 stall Dynamic will creep forward at a 900 rpm idle on level ground.

The OP hasn't offered enough info on his 550 HP 440.
5000 is overkill and not needed. imo BTDT. lol

Get a converter BUILT TO YOUR SPECIFICATIONS. Just because my Whiz-Bang 5000 works in my car, doesn't mean it will work worth a damn in your car. Contact one of the converter builders that have been mentioned many times on this board and get one for your specific application. An even better idea would be to contact 2 or 3 builders and see what they recommend for your use. Keep in mind too, that quality doesn't come cheap. Over the years, I've seen that you only get what you pay for.

Dear lord there is a lot of miss-information on this thread from folks that have probably never had an 8" converter.

Yes, you can drive a "5k" converter on the street...and NO, it is not too much if you have a good converter and a properly setup car.

For what its worth: My street/strip Barracuda has an 8" converter that stalls a little over 5k behind my 408....it pushes my car to low 10's in the 1/4.....AND it can drive down the street at 2000-2500RPM without issues. I drive my car all over town on the weekends that I'm not racing....heck, ~ 50% of the time I drive to the race track, compete in an event clicking off 6.4x's in the 1/8 mile and then drive home!

I guess the real question is, what is street-able to you? This varies from person to person.

5k too high for the strip....WHAT?!?! Have you been to a drag strip? Almost every fast (or relativly fast) NA car I know at the strip has at LEAST a 4500 stall (most are 5000-5500)

There must have been something else wrong with the trans. "rev high enough to hit stall"....I don't think you have any idea how a torque converter works.
My 5k converter makes my car creep at idle, leaves traffic lights at 1500-2000rpm.....but if I put my foot down it jumps straight to 5200rpm.
