Took 65 for quick spin today to test out my " pump it down" fix for my p.s. pump, half a block away and notice my temp gauge had spiked. Went around the block (with my new improved steering :) and checked temp with my heat gun, everything was fine about 165. I unplugged the temp sending unit and that made no difference still spiked at hot. So thinking it's the gauge or wiring in between. Any tests I can do that don't involve removing the cluster right now? I did have the gauges gone through 4-5 years ago and they've been fine till this. thanks

Not really (Tests involving "not removing). The wire goes from the sender, through the bulkhead connector to the cluster. One wire. There is a chance it could be shorted somewhere, examine the harness running along the engine. Otherwise it's pull cluster time

Do you have a factory oil gauge? Did either that or fuel also spike? That would indicate problems in the IVR. I've forgetten "I think" the IVR in yours is inside the fuel gauge. Will have three stud terminals.

Q. If you ground the wire going to the temp guage, it should pin the guage, yes?
Isnt there an ohm range for the temp sender?
Joe

The voltage regulator is not the issue. It could be a dead sending unit or the wire is shorted to ground somewhere.
Check the sending unit Ω reading from terminal to ground and see what it is. I will go and see what one of mine reads and post it.

The IVR on my 65 Valiant plugged into the back of the cluster. On the 64 I have now, it's inside the fuel gauge. I assume his is the 65 Dart in his avatar....so I would "guess" his also plugs into the back of the cluster.......but guessin is dangerous. LOL

Turned out it was the connection wire was going bad where it slid over temp sending unit. Took care of it, thanks

You sure about that? If it had a bad connection I would think the gauge would go the other way. I would have to verify but if you disconnect the wire the gauge should go to zero. If you ground it should peg the gauge. Therefore a loose connection would give you a zero or low reading.
