Hi Folks

Can anyone tell me the purpose of the small spring that is in the area of where the choke pull off attaches. It looks like an advance spring from a distributor. Newer models have a spring that wraps around the shaft instead.

I have a couple of these carbs, and they all have different strength springs on them. Figuring if I knew the purpose of the spring, I could figure out how strong it has to be. Picture copied from a FABO post. Thanks

To keep it operating as intended by the engineers who designed it.
Play with it some and see how it operates. It helps keep the relationship correct at different times of operation.

I believe it controls secondary air flap progression for a smooth hit on operation when opening on instant wide open throttle. Take it off and the engine will bog when getting into the secondaries due to no accelerator pump in the secondary circuit. So a loose spring will give you a harder secondary hit, But also loose will make it bog.

That little spring has nothing to do with air valve operation. I remove it & the other choke pieces because in the moderate climate I live in, choke is not needed.
