Timing Chain Tensioner

I picked up a timing chain tensioner and now I can't get the timing chain on. There is so much tension that I can't move the cam sprocket enough to get it on. Anyone hints or suggestions on how this is supposed to be installed?
 
the one im familiar with has a pin in it to hold the tension until you have everything installed, then you pull the pin putting the tension on the chain
 
That's the one, part number P5007709. If it were as simple as pulling the pin I wouldn't be posting this. LOL

With the tensioner on I don't have enough slack to get the timing chain on. Obvisouly doing what it supposed to do. If I remove the tensioner I don't have any problems installing the chain. The timing chain in brand new. I haven't pulled the pin yet because I haven't installed the chain.
 
I put the crank gear on first then the chain onto the cam gear and then engage the chain with the crank gear. The cam gear can then be set onto the end of the cam. If it doesn't fit that way I would suspect the chain is the wrong one. good luck! Mike
 
Sometimes its a pita to get the chain on the tensioner slide while also trying to get teh keyways lined up. Keep after it. I will put the cma gear retainer bolt on teh cam with no washer, and snug it enough to be able to turn the cam with a box end wrench in either direction. Line up the dots on the gears with the chain lying on a bench. Then, rotate the cam gear and chain around the crank gear abot 45°. Holding the assembly with the crank gear in your left hnd, and the cam in your right, put the crank gear in place, not quite all the way on. Leave it off about 1/8" from "all the way" back on the crank. Dont let the chain slacken, so the marks wwill still line up. When the crank gear is where you want it, rotate the cam gear and chain around the cranks gear counter clockwise, so the chain hits the tensioner guide close to where it will end up, and slip the cam gear over the cam. The bolt should come thru the gear, even with the keyway not yet hitting the gear. Use the wrench to trun the crank to align the keyway and slot in the gear. You may need to use a little pressure to get the keyway in, but it will go. Then, tap it on, pull the bolt, add the washer, torque the bolt with the washer and fuel pump eccentric, rotate the engine around one complete revolution to make sure it's all still int he right alignment, and pull the pin. I ususally add some assembly lube on the chain to make sure the tensioner guide doesnt wear off right away, before the oil can drain and splash on it.
