The radial tires on my '66 Form. S are at least 9 years old and show no real wear or aging. Sidewalls look great (no signs of weathering or cracking), treadwear is perfect & traction is fine! Based just on its age is it time for a new set? A tire place told me that tires, regardless of treadwear should be replaced every 5 years.

Seems to me that tire place is trying to sell you new tires. No dry rotting and good treadwear? Holding air? No belt shift? Why replace them?

your tire shop does not lie tires have a shelf life of 5 years even if they are never mounted on a car. the rubber breaks down so they will be more prone to a sudden blow out even if they look perfect

Totally agree here....for safety. Many tires break down from the inside out. You could chance them on street driving, but I wouldn't trust them for the highway. I prefer safe shoes for my ride :read2:

Agreed, mount them on some cheap wheels for a smoke show every now and again and then get some new ones!

Really? A shelf life? On tires? The last shop I worked for was a tire shop and no one ever said anything...granted the tires we had in stock never stayed in stock for more than a few months, but there were some odd size snow tires that had been in inventory for over five years that stayed in the rotation as new to customers. And Green Diamond (greendiamondtire.com) was always taking tires from us for casings to be used as their remolds. From experience I just replaced a couple of Coopers on Pop's van due to treadwear that were about 7-8 yrs old. That being the case, too, how does Michelin or Bridgestone warranty some tires on treadware 80,000 miles when the average driver sees about 12,000 miles a year? That's close to seven years for full treadwear.... Live and learn I guess.

there is a date code on them too that will tell you exactly how old they are.

There Was A Big Expose Over This With One Of The Tv News Show. A Family Had Bought A Set Of Tires For Their Daughters Car. One Tire Came Apart & Caused The Car To Roll. The Crash Killed The Daughter.there Is A Self Life On Tires. They Will Come Apart! I Took Two New Spares Out Of Dodge Vans, These Were Stored Inside The Van, Never On The Ground. New Tires. I Mounted Them Up For Tires On My Trailer. The First Time I Used Them, Both Completely Fell Apart. I'm A Firm Believer About The Age Of The Tires.
