Not at all. I don’t care if a 318 can go 4.040 but I’d love to see the sonic test. If ring seal doesn’t matter then that’s probably ok. What makes you think I’m pissed off? Calling out jokers like you and 318WR should be more commonplace. Do what you want, just don’t tell me how good or cool it is and then set up some stupid rules to make the OP sound like a genius when in reality he is just playing for an audience. It’s sad really.
i ant got nuttun to do with rules, or the OP!! and dont asume somebody you dont know is a joker!! dont let my southern accent fool you! hell with it,..you already know errything,..go start a thread and preach your own gospel, see if you get any followers!

I don't have a dog in the hunt with this dumbass argument, but, as I said in an earlier post, Hensley Motorsports has been building 318 4" plus bore crate engines for about thirty years. They do sonic testing and only use those that are thick enough.....and there are some that are thick enough. This has been common knowledge for a long time now.

That said, I kinda agree with your assessment about this thread being somewhat a "fantasy", in fact, I've already said as much talking about the little box he put it in.......BUT, it's HIS box and HIS thread and HIS rules. Let him have fun. I have a slant 6 box. I have fun with that. You have fun (I hope) with what you do.

His point was plainly explained in his first post. Nobody likes everything or every scenario. Even I don't see the sense in some of his boxing in......but damn, it's his hypothetical reality. .....and staying within his parameters, he's right.

If the thread is so silly, why are you here ??? LOL... and again, what did UT do to you??? Let me guess, you can't stay out of his channel either. Every video, you are watching and disgruntled. I sure hope you find happiness in your own life.
And the most sincere "best of wishes" I can give you.... Find Happiness !!!!

Now, I lead by example, I chose not to spend another 3 seconds on another of your posts. So, I'll click the ignore :)

Naw, I ignore you tubers and guys that hack stuff together. And I’m here as an opposing view point which makes you a very cranky boy.

Why all the hate? All I did was call out the OP on his silly fantasy. I see he did another thread like this one and I didn’t say a thing in that one. It’s like dungeons and dragons. I know what it is, but I don’t do fantasy role playing, so don’t be a hater.

I know there are 318’s that will go 4.00 but I’ve never seen one I’d be comfortable with making any power and getting the rings to seal. And with his parameters (or rules) he is right. It’s just silly to think 1k will break someone to the point they can’t do a build. I also say there is no way you can buy a 318 core and spend 3k on and have something that I would put my name on. I wouldn’t even do something like that for myself. We should be encouraging the youth that want to do this stuff to not repeat what we did when we were there age and teach them the proper way to do things. That’s what I’m saying. I don’t want to tell someone that just cobbling something together for a less than shoestring budget is the best plan financially. Isn’t the saying penny wise and pound foolish? The end result is more important than a budget only a miser would consider workable.

I thought an intelligent post from the other side would be......
  • Here are a few 340's for sale locally to me on CL, and they are 500 for a good short block.
  • Then I'd add A, B, C, and D with the remainder of my 2500 hundred and that would cover all gaskets, heads, cam, intake and carb.
  • I think this build would be a better performer than the 3k into the 318, still making the 340 the engine of choice for performance between the 2 engines even on a 3k budget.

Well, if there's anyone on here who can relate to his budget, it's me. I completely get that. I also know there are some places you don't cut corners. I could go into my opinions there, but there's no need to drag up another argument. I get what he's after, I do. I see your point as well.....but let the guy have his fun. This is a hobby after all, right?

the point to my first post was, one car built on a tight budget believe it was about 600 bucks of summit receipts (early 90s) came with the well thought out 318 vs the duster that spent 28 years (at the time early 90s) drag strip only with all the goody's when i got it was and how close i felt thay were! didnt mean to set ol wize one off on a tarrent!!

I believe asking a question, even through hypothetical scenarios, can generate new avenues and ways of thinking that breaks the cookie cutter mold. People have to have an open mind, weigh it out with reasoning.

I like the thread. It's what this place is all about.

There are some that are sold out in theory and will never get past that this isn't 1975 anymore. I find this in our hobby with the older (I'm getting there myself) folks that had something instilled in them 40 years ago and they go ballistic when a thought challenges that doctrine. Here is a prime example. I had a 1954 Ford Crestline for sale in my front yard. And old gentleman caught my wife at the Post Office and said "what year is the Buick in your front yard". My wife said "that is a 1954 Ford". He got stern and said "I know it's a Buick, that's from my era blah blah blah blah". She politely said "it's a 1954". Smiled and walked away. Why? The old stubborn crow was set that NO lady much younger would tell HIM about those 50's cars. LOL.

I actually enjoy dirt road builds. They're fun. It's like hot rodding almost at its inception purt near 100 years ago. Plus, it's mostly all I can afford. I have the knowledge to build an 800HP engine just like some big names, but I'll never be able to and it doesn't bother me. I actually LIKE where I am in the hobby. I'm havin a blast.

seen idk how many young folks come on here asking how to get a lil spunk outta a 318 to be told and preached how wrong it is to even consider hopping up a 318, most seem to fall off and drift away! not every body looking for all out race type of builds! i think a 350 hp 318 in a light A body might be a bit much for some pimple faced 17 year old to start with!! but that get told no,..build 600 hp or forget it,..thats skerry,..how bad things happen we wish didnt! let them build a 318,..thrash it out,..learn to do a burn out,..how to drive somptin with some power, not all that power!! thatll keep them in the hobby longer and teach them basic stuff too!! not every body needs a stroker or aluminum heads ether come to think of it! DWB!

i can tell you are having the time of your life with that Early A. It's genuine! Before there was ever a Roadkill show, I was roadkill. It's how I enjoyed the hobby. Never has a drag strip been shut down for clean up due to my junk (oops... jinxed myself !). However, I've waited countless times in staging lanes for over an hour due to some expensive machine shop build exploding. Cheap doesn't mean unreliable.

I've been on here a little over 20 months and have never X any one.

I have built a few 2.2's, 3 273's, maybe 15 318's and 20 360's but never a 340, never need to. I am doing my first 5.9. I've helped build many others. I started when I was 12 and I am 65 now.

FACT: I've had more than you think message me on my youtube channel and email about help with their 318, low dollar builds due to the fact that they won't come here to FABO for help. This thread alone shows the reasons why.

I bet there's two to three times or more people with 273/318 and never mind the /6 guy's have under there hoods than 340/360, If everyone yanked there 273/318 tomorrow a swapped in a 360 like the 360 crowd wants 360 would dry up and become big dollar. Most 273/318 guy's are looking for little gains basically tune, mild cam, 4bbl and duals and maybe headers yes a 360 would be slightly better but the mild hopped up 273/318 would be enough power for most.

I tend to get IGNORANT when someone calls me stupid or fool. I have studied most things automotive over the years, and I have a lot of hands on, not just book learning. I also try to teach or mentor people if they want to learn. But if you think my answers are Bat Crap, explain in simple terms and I may learn.

I will not piss on your back if you don't like what I have to say. If you don't like me, that is NONE of my business and it will not change my way of dealing with you.

I've always loved the idea of building an actual blueprinted 1971 340. Right by the book specs. Chrysler didn't do that. Their decks were tall and crooked, their chambers too big and a myriad of other inconsistencies that I would get dead right. The only one deviation I might make would be to use the 68 4 speed cam. Cheatin a little, but still a stock Chrysler piece. Even use the 71 iron intake and TQ. ...but add big tube headers. In an A body of course. Kinda stock eliminator style. But alas, it'll never happen. It'd be fun though.

I played "mildly" with the 2.2 turbo cars. They were a blast. I have had every LA small block and magnum in my drive way, many times over. I've hopped up 318's, 340's, and 360's. I love them all. I have zero partiality because I know what each brings to the table and I take them for what they are and what they bring.

And actually, I have recommended this site to a lot of people, and have included this site in many of my videos. I try to send Joey some folks this way. I also think this site can be very informative, but unfortunately some drive them away. Too bad too.

That's the best thing about these low powered engines the factory cam is so small the most mildest of cams is gonna give huge results and give power everywhere.
