IT must be worth it cause that's what people are payingI wouldn't spend 1000 bucks on a 340 block, they're not worth it.

I always found that good heads, intake, carb, and even cam will transfer right on over to a 360 if one would choose down that road. That free good running 318 ? Give it to the next guy.....Not a thing wrong with low buck, I fit that to a t. But I value every dollar so I put it to the best value, I’m not part of the throw away crowd of today. Bad part, if you spend a few bucks in that 318, how far do you go into that hole before you can’t back up? Carb intake and cam is it then you got a peppy little engine but no world beater and can back away easy.
well, you wouldn't buy that one...How much is a 340 block worth that has a rod hanging out of the side? Still $1000? Ever watch Nascar or nhra? And seen those engines from the pros drop a rod or the likes?
I saw a set of X heads on flea bay for $2000 just a few days ago...IT must be worth it cause that's what people are paying
I agree. With the LA 318s I've built it was never anything more than cam, headers, intake and 4 barrel. Plus the gasket kit bearings oil pump timing chain etc.Not a thing wrong with low buck, I fit that to a t. Even if you had a set of X heads on the bench that needed a total rehab, the costs to rebuild and up grade is more than a set of current full loaded aluminum.I saw a set of X heads on flea bay for $2000 just a few days ago...
I should sell the 2 sets i have and buy a 273 and build it to beat a 318I saw a set of X heads on flea bay for $2000 just a few days ago...
It’s called trying to have a reasonable discussion until the “hate” crap comes out. You can’t have a reasonable discussion when the whole thing is tied down by a dumb budget.

I have a set on my one 340 I was thinking the same. Sell them, get a set of eddy's and pocket $400 LOL!I should sell the 2 sets i have and buy a 273 and build it to beat a 318
I agree it was stupid, I also wondered if it was a bidding war over them. I dunno I can see someone with more money than brains paying it. Especially for a resto. There are lots of stuff listed there for stupid prices that never sells. I checked the completed auctions and there were none listed.
If you are referring to the OP, I concur...This thread was never intended as a “reasonable discussion”, he has got just exactly what he was looking for from the start. A lot of bickering and arguing. It was not about provoking thought or dialogue or opening anyone’s mind.
It was all about stirring the pot and he has done that job well.
well, friend, you couldn't be further from the truth.....This thread was never intended as a “reasonable discussion”, he has got just exactly what he was looking for from the start. A lot of bickering and arguing. It was not about provoking thought or dialogue or opening anyone’s mind.

What HP do you think it would produce? I have learned the Magnum head are far better than the 318 LA's a plus IMO.Dollar for dollar 318 is better at $3000. Build a good solid bottom end 318 for $1500 -$2000 the other 1000-1500 goes towards camshaft, a little head work on some magnum heads and Intake carb

My take would be to do the opposite. I'd build the snot out of the top half (cam, heads, intake, carb) and leave the bottom end alone. I know a guy that raced a 318 in stock eliminator and shifted at 7200 rpm's for 4 yrs with stock rods and crank. They are tough.Dollar for dollar 318 is better at $3000. That's my point you got a $1000 paper weight.well, you wouldn't buy that one...
I agree but some worry about the bottom end. I really think that are pretty solid. My take would be to do the opposite. yes you may But between you and me, and everyone else.... Only "I" know my true intentions. And I say I was pointing out a "historic" moment in our Mopar History. A time that now at even 3k to spend, it may make more sense to build a 318. It was never meant to slam a 340, which I've owned, built, and loved.I can agree to disagree.
yep, just get a 360/5.9 for less than half thatI wouldn't spend 1000 bucks on a 340 block, they're not worth it.
I agree I am putting one together now and I had backed off on going .030 over for that reason, to keep it around a while. I measured taper and figured my rings will seal, and for the mileage ill put on it it should last as long as I have it and it is the numbers matching block to my car. the 340 in the car is period correct but not numbers matching and that one is .30 over. But yes i would think as a race motor I'd build something "more affordable"That's my point you got a $1000 paper weight.
I like 340's I have one but it's better served in a resto type project . So it has a better chance of survival.
I get a budget Rusty. What I don’t get is a 1985 budget in 2021 dollars. It is a hobby for sure. But you wouldn’t buy a house to fix up and base your plans on a 1985 dollar budget would you? And would you purposefully limit your budget even though the end result would be a home with less value because you decided to live on a miserly budget? So a home and a hobby aren’t exactly the same, but that’s no less a realistic comparison as is this whole thread.
