Today, dollar for dollar, is the 318 faster than the 340 ???

would you agree ?

  • yep, the 318 wins if buying and building for under 3k

Well first off it doesn't cost $1200 for a roller cam setup in a magnum or a 340. You can easily build a good bottom end for around $1200. Nothing cheating out here it is what it is. Then get some magnum heads get a touch up on the valves. And pick a cam around $300. Nothing el'cheapo about it that's what it costs. So guess I'm trying to figure out why you think it cost $5000 to build a worthy engine?

Heck go get a reman magnum short block and throw a cam in it

Yeah, it is 1200 bucks or more for a good roller cam. I don’t use OE lifters on an aftermarket cam. Again, if like the OP you think it’s cool to keep building stuff like you had to do in high school I say fine. I prefer to keep up with technology and move forward. I don’t run stud rockers so a magnum head is never something I use in any build. So more fantasy land builds. How about you build this elusive 3k 318 world beater and let’s get it on a dyno and see what it really does.

Flat tappet cams have gotten the job done for decades. Roller LA's are not too hard to find and are plenty cheap. If I go roller, I go roller from the factory meaning later LA or Magnum. That takes a bite out of crime... I mean the cost... LOL

I agree and I'm not makin the argument for or against, simply stating rollers.....at least HIGH QUALITY rollers are not cheap. AT ALL. I'm not talkin about factory Magnum junk, either. I'm talking about HIGH TECH solid rollers and everything that goes with them to make them work and live. You know, like 1000 dollar pressure fed big wheel lifters? It's not a cheap proposition, but it is a power making one.

Objects in mirror, are closer than they appear !!! Polls show the 318 only down by 7. And, the 10 votes that state "good point, never thought of it like that" have to state a wavering vote towards the 318.

I'm cheering for neither, but reality is settling in ......

Like fudge, it's too rich for me...

I just don't know what to say. If somebody doesn't like a 318 "just cause" it's a 318, they got problems. Like they might cross dress when they get home or somethin.

Lol a simple humble thread .. no we have to spend the price of a new vehicle on a rebuild or we are cheap ... lol

Anyone that thinks you can't build a good solid motor for $3000 has serious issues the factory magnums run 300,000 miles when taken care of . I beat my last 5.2 all stock except cam and usual bolt on stuff for 125,000 miles. Burnout contests, drag races, down shift punch n cackles. Seemed to have plenty of long life span for the torture. It dynoed at 330hp at 5,8000

Might have been cheap but it was quick and lived through alot of abuse!!

I can agree on the magnum for a budget power maker. I think an la would eat the budget as you'd need heads...I'm talking 318 vs 5.2 the 5.2 would come with the better heads.5.2 already has roller cam also.

What cam did you run ?

That 400 block sitting in the corner is looking better and better.
oh but I have a GOOD 413 block I'm going to stroke.
I know, why don't I get a 440 block instead.
because I have a VERY GOOD 413 block already decked and bored to 4.250 and can go more. lol
I don't know what cubes yet, but I'm going to build it because I can.
and It will make 600 hp. lol easily.

Reality? That made me laugh. Good one.

You cheap skate! Go put your little small block stroker on the dyno then compare that to even a aluminum 528 hemi. You don't have to keep acting like your are still in high school. $3000 is all it takes to build a solid 318 factory lifters last hundreds of thousand miles. Not sure how long your fancy high dollar lifters last? Got a 100,000 miles on them yet? The factory stuff just keeps going.

And you shall rule the mopar world with an iron fist

yeah... I gotta start think'n a little about my 440....

I will never build a NHRA Class race car so a 700 HP 528 is not going to happen. Rich boy racer above can have at it.

My desires are to build a cheap go fast car/truck. Will it make 300 HP? I don't care.
For my Little Red truck I almost bought a Lunati 'Thumper' cam just for the lope but its the wife's truck and she would not be happy.
My son has a 5.2 long block that I may build just for the Loppy idle and put it in my 1984 Rampage.
Lunati rollor cams run $259. Rock Auto has stock 5.2 hyd roller lifters for less than $6 each X 16. Need some 6.950" hollow pushrods, Trick Flow are about $100.

i wonder if they have retro fit roller lifters for 340 Im sure they do but I beleive there is a lifter bore casting issue between the LA and magnum. I beleive the magnum has beefier lifter bores for the roller lifters. ( I will admit i dont actually know never had a magnum apart)Now say you add the roller lifters to a 340 how much HP gain? My experience if with 5.0m Fox body with roller cams is they wind up quick. less resistance etc, you can tell by how the engine revs.

those 5.0's are only 3" stroke too which helps with the revs. plus it has a majic (some would have you believe) 4" bore size.
