I have a '73 Duster with a warmer over 340. The transmission and motor were rebuilt 1,000 mile ago. Last time I got on the gas, a loud bang and then no forward motion - the motor just revs. What could be the problem? Could the torque converter be messed up. Any input greatly appreciated?:read2:

First of off Welcome!

Sounds like your transmission or converter grenaded on the inside. Any fluid leaking? jack up the rear tires to see if you can rotate the wheels by hand? The converter will need fluid to move the car. Either way you will have to remove the transmission to really get a look at things. If there is failure in either one there is metal fragments more than likely all through the transmission system. When a transmission went out on me it wouldn't move in reverse but would move in forward.

If it won't move any direction it's probably the converter but if it still moves backwards it's in the trans. Mullinax is right about having to take it out either way and no matter what broke the other will be full of metal. Don't forget to flush the cooler too. It'll probably have fragments in it too.

I'll throw out a guess.
Sounds like the shoulder on the band that the adjuster pushes on broke off the band.
With only 1000 miles I'd guess a cheap replacement went in.
You still have to pull the tranny to fix, but you might not need a complete rebuild, just a new band and gaskets. Check for metal, but you might luck out.
good luck

I respectfully inject this is not possible. Neither band will stop forward motion all together if broken. The front band is only for 2nd gear so it would still have 1st and 3rd with a broken front band. The rear band is mainly only for reverse so if it broke it would only loose reverse. I say mainly because the rear band does apply in manual low but it would still drive in 1st gear if broken. It just wouldn't provide extra holding power for the rear sprague to protect it under high stress.

When the cars running and in gear is the driveshaft turning? It's a longshot but I broke an axle at the dragstrip a few years ago and the motor just reved. Once I got the car home and jacked it up I noticed that one wheel just freewheeled.
