Hello folks I haven't been around in a while because of life happening but this weekend I had a birds eye view of a friend grenading his 727 in his 65 CoronetI was next in the staging lanes and thank his lucky stars he had a blanket on his trans. He ended up with a broken foot in two places. Very lucky.So my question is I have a 440 727 in my 67 Cuda and was wondering is there anything other than a blanket that fits. I would prefer not to use a blanket as everyone knows they hold the heat. Oh I have a stock floor as well.
 
Can you get a big block 904 ? I thought they were only SB or slant ?

and 72 Dart Swinger 540/518

to get the shields to fit

I like the looks of the TCI. I am thinking there will be fitment issues with a 440 727 TCI? What about the composite shields. I am guessing they are not as strong.
 
It's not the engine size that matters

It's the shield
it hit's at the seam where the front floor/ trans tunnel meets the firewall
and the sides of the tunnel
 
Why not build your 727 so it doesn't have the grenading issue? Valve Body with LBA (Stock valve bodies have this feature) 16 Roller Ultimate Sprag. & a billet steel reverse/high clutch drum. Sure it's a few more $$$, but a lot less than a prosthetic leg & no hassle trying to find a blanket to fit that wont guarantee bits of the trans not coming thru the floor.

Your trying to put a 2 inch peg into a 1 3/4 inch hole. It is a tough fit. The soft blanket can help. But does not stop the bell housing for getting you. The Hard (metal) covers have the same problem. Carbon fiber (glove type) generally work with alum. drums. Steel drums can through them. Going to billet steel drums does help greatly. However not fool proof, all it does is raise the rpm point until it lets go. And by raising the bursting point you also increasing the energy it is going to release. Resulting in an even bigger explosion. Anything you do for safety with these is likely and will increase the heat. Fix it! Install a large enough "separate with fan" external trans. cooler to solve the problem. Now as for the 904. We all know that the physical parts inside it are small, right? Due to their small size they will have less inertia, with this lighter weight it raises the rpm limit that they explode at. It takes a much higher rpm to reach its bursting point. It is slightly higher than billet drums. So, ultimately the 904 also has a limit also. ULTIMATLY it's not about what fits. It's about what you can put under there to protect you if it happens to you.
 
If he's going to run his car at a NHRA race trank, an approved shield or blanket is required. One would have to check the rule book to find out what class it is mandatory for. Most racers I've know over the years, had some sort of protection, no matter what class/speed they ran. It makes no difference to the NHRA if your transmission is the $$$$ unit or a stock unit, a shield of some sort is needed.
 
any bracket car that runs 10.99 and faster is required to have a blanket or shield...
 
I hope you friends feet are doing well. It's a good thing he had something on it. It could have been much worse. Heat can be dealt with easily. Injuries and loosing body parts can not. I have been doing extensive research on the subject of "soft blankets" and "hard covers". What their capabilities are and what materials they contain. I can tell you this, the cost "in $", for the ballistic materials needed to protect you in this type of blast is very high.

Let me ask you this gentleman: Lets say your going to war, you are going in and your going to get shot at! But before you go, you go stand in line to get your "bullet proof" vest.
Now there are two lines. The first line has a sign that says "Sometimes" for that vest. The other line says "Most of the time" for that vest. The "Sometimes" vest costs you $450. The "Most of the Time" vest costs you $900. Which one would you choose???
 
Or your buying a parachute to jump out of a plane. One is 200.00 one is 1000.00 which one are you going to trust?
