Trunk Lid Alignment after new w/strip

Car back from body and paint with all panels fitting nicely, but after installing new trunk weatherstrip (SoffSeal I think) my deck lid is way too high all around. Probably an eighth to a quarter inch
Adjusting the obvious way by loosening the lid-to-hinge bolts while "an assistant" pushed down did not work. There's "play" in the hinges that prevents this.
Will this thing maybe squish down on it's own in time or something? Wondering also about the different holes available for the trunk torsion bars.

I had same problem with my 67. It has relaxed some and allowed a lower adjustment at the bolts over the last year
