Are valve covers the same for all small blocks? I got some and the box says for 273, 340 & 360 I thougth they would all be the same so I tried them on my 318, but they hit the rocker arms is there a difference, or are these just cheap valve covers.

If they hit the rocker arms on a 318 then they will on a 273,340 or 360.

Where do they hit? Did you try with a gasket? Depending on the rockers, they may hit the baffles on some cheaper models.

You most likley need the taller covers, wich are a little harde to find, or maybe you could put a spacer under the cover. I think Don at FBOsystems has the cover spacers. You will also need longer valve cover hold down bolts.

They hit where the breather attaches. Stupid question, but what motor would fit the lower valve covers?

All LA engine valve covers will fit any LA small block ie. 273,318,340, and 360.
They will not fit the Magnum engines.
If they are not hitting real bad, you could probably dent them in a little, where they are hitting. I had to do this once on a cheep set of covers. They were hitting where the breather/ oil filler went on.
Use the good mopar thick grey coloured gaskets P/N5249581,available from Summitt for around $18-20. I have had good luck with these. They are also reuseable.
I like good stock Mopar valve covers I've never had them hit. You can paint them any colour you like.
Good luck

LA valve covers fit magnum heads just fine. I have a set of the MP cast LA coves on my magnum heads (also had a set of Moroso chrome steel LA covers on it too). Yes the magnum head has 10 mounting screws but 5 of them are in the same place as the LA mounting screws. Just use an LA gasket and it covers the un-used holes and you are good to go.

I stand corrected. I did not now that. All I knew was they had more hold down holes. Good to know, Thanks

Geez... I would have thought like you Dave. Thats the good thing about this site...lots of great info.
Happy New years everone!!!

What seems to be the problem is the baffle in the cover that hits the rocker on full lift.Their are different covers with smaller baffles in them, but you can dent the baffle plate with a small ball peen hammer to indent the area that touches. Also use a felpro race gasket with allan key scews to raise the cover up about 1/8-3/16 to gain clearance.Check the area under the cover and post a pic of it and see if the dent method will work,if so,great,if not raise the cover with the race gasket or double up the gaskets by glueing two together and installing the allan key screws and nuts to help solve the problem,Mrmopartech

MrMopartech, Sounds like you've been there before, also look if your running mech. rockers that the adjusting screw isn't hitting the cover as this is a problem with tall adjusting screws. Then if it is then just dent the area that the screw is hitting and you'll be fine.

I pulled the covers off, and took a hammer and carefully dented the baffel area and no luck the only way these are going to fit is either get a 1/2 spacer or remove the baffel area all together. either way I got these valve covers off ebay, and only paid $30.00 for them (get what you pay for), I was in the process of swithching my intake thought as long as they were off I would put the chrome ones on, ended up putting the old ones back on for now.
