I recently bought a set of 920 heads for my 273. I have notice there to be more play with the valves in the guides then I feel comfortable with. I noticed some of the guides has rings in them, I assume knurling? I plan on doing gasket matching and some other work on the ports and bowls myself. Should I have the guide work done before or after the the bowl work? Also should I have bronze inserts put in the guides or something else done? What should I expect to pay for such work? Thoughts or suggestions?

hi, use the bronze liners , made by K-line. do port work before then guides then valve grind.

I'm a little different than perfcar - I want the valve job done before I do any hand porting. That's because I have a 5 angle job done which really reduces the amount of grinding and it gives me the opportunity to not get too near the seat angles and mess something up. The guides have to be done prior to any valve/seat work that is done as part of the valve job, and because they were knurled - they may not be able to use liners. So have them carefully checked before you invest anything in them.

So after playing around, if I put my finger over the top of the guide and pull out the valve at a good speed they make a pretty loud pop. I may not do anything to them right away now. I talked to a machine shop I have used in the past on the AL head in my daily driver and they said they don't do liners and said for new bronze guides it was $125 for labor, plus guides, and $98 for vg on both heads. I was talking to a guy local, that races a Dart on the strip, and he said the in the new guides would be better for the long run from his experience. Right now I think I will run the guides as is then later down the road put in new guides and valves if necessary.
