1968 dart. Is the last 6 or so vin #s on the rad support and the trunk lip? Any place else to look? Need to prove the car is one of the same. Thanks. Kim

IIRC

In 68 like 67 the core support and trunk lip still had the SO number not the serial number from the vin.

The SO number is only on the build sheet and IBM card and fender tag, and the vin is on the build sheet and IBM card so with out either there is no way to tie the car's vin to the SO number.

In 69 I believe the vin was used.

Thanks Dana, I forgot about the package tray. I wasn’t sure it was the SO or vin in those places being it’s a 68. This car has had the vin number changed and I’m trying to prove that. Thanks

There is limited info on the vin but if the vin shows a slant and it has a V8 (yes I know it can be swapped) that is a clue the vin is not original to the car.

1968 Body Code (1968 only):

Digit 1, Plant (7th digit in VIN)
Digit 2, Year
Digit 3, Car Line
Digits 4-9, SO Number

From what I've read, 68 is a really tricky year. The body numbers are still the (whatever you call them) "order numbers" so they are not a VIN. The only place on a 68 that I know for the VIN is the dash, which can be unbolted. We had a member here sometime back, who had bought a 68 WITH NO DASH

I do not remember what you must do to justify the order numbers to a VIN, I believe you must have the build sheet. At one time there was a place you could write to and obtain a printout "for the car."

Did it / does it have the "certicard??
