I have seen this brought up on many sites and heard of some ridicules explanations. Does anyone know why it is there? Just curious to here some answers from guys that assume they know. Guys that have been here might know but does anyone else. Some have washers and some have tabs. There actually is a reason for this.

My 70 340 Swinger has a washer welded on...have heard the many discussions, but never a real answer....please teach us!

Only what I read here, extra welding was done with washer around the LCAs ….

It means its a HiPo k-member.
They used a thicker chrome-moly material , reinforcements and more extensive welding.

They were built stronger with reinforcements. They were used on all 340 cars 1970-1972. The washer /tab was welded on to identify the k-member to use with heavier torsion bars and a stabilizer bar. Early cars with heavier bars were notorious for tearing the sleeve out of the K-member if you drove them like you stole them.. I had some 68 4spd cars years back that had 894 895 bars with the heavier stabilizer that destroyed the K-member from tearing the sleeve out.

The one I cut apart to build my open style . I noticed it was also welded inside. That was the first one I ever cut apart. If you wanted room for maintanance at the track or lightening on SS Hemi cars You had to do a factory K-member. No after market K members are allowed. You must use all factory parts they can be modified but they had to start off as a factory part. Those are the rules. These are made for all Bartons SS cars. They even have to use the factory steering box, So we would drop and extend the factory pitman and idler to prevent bump steer The drag links were drilled to remove the tapers so Hiem ends could be used. Torsion bars had to be used no coil overs.

Ray Bartons Hemi Dart on the lift. That man taught me some things. I sold him Barracudas and Darts. In return he gave me some knowledge.

I have helped Roland leong on occasions but that style of racing was way beyond my finances. . I only knew where the heavy things went in the trailer.

I was just messing around about the Chrome Moly ... surprised nobody called me on it. Lol

I thought the washers were the reject ones they fixed. So they knew they were repaired.
:(
Cough Cough. Lol
