Ok, so a lot of porting work and cosmetic clean up on the 360 J heads. I am supposed to take them to the machine shop next week. Last weekend I ran into to a fella that has a set of Magnum heads from an "89" PU and he's offering them to me for supper cheap. He said I could have them checked before I buy them, so not overly concerned. I know they're a roller set up, so there's that. Cost a little more but... Better. The magnum heads have some different hole locations for water or oil whatever it it is not sure. What would I encounter trying to make these heads work on my "72" 340 block. Any help/advise will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well, the '89 wouldn't have magnum heads from the factory. Now maybe somebody put a magnum in the '89 truck. Magnum heads oil different and don't have the rocker shaft. I'd verify they are magnum heads before doing anything.

Good to know. They do have square rocker stands. No rockers just valves & springs. I only have what he said and he did say "magnum". He said the truck was an "89", nothing about the motor.

Magnum heads won't have the heat crossover. Magnum heads won't have the same angle of intake bolt holes. Magnum heads will have blocks or pedestals for the rocker arms, not cradles for rocker shafts. You better read up a little and look at pictures so you know what your getting into. Magnum heads have been put on LA engines lots of times, but you just have to know what to expect.

Sounds like a lot more than I'm willing to do or pay for right now just trying to get this thing back on the road. I would be past the $1500 mark just to get the correct valvetrain. I can use that on better heads or stroker parts latter when I really build this thing. Right now it just needs to run. But run strong.

I'd say where you are, I'd just finish the J heads also.
