What is the biggest cam you can use with stock springs. What power would it make with a 750 carb headers and such..350 ish

The smallest Hughes Whiplash cam is supposed to work with stock springs. Supposedly.

You are limited to something at or less than .480 lift WITH 1.5 ratio rockers, this work out to .320 lift AT THE CAM; with the Magnums 1.6 ratio rockers you get .512 lift at the valve. At about .525 lift at the valve, you have collision issues with retainers and guides, coil bind. Those are the physical limitations, I'm not sure how well stock springs would maintain valve train control, they might be just a little weak.

To gain peace of mind, you might want to trim the tops of your guides and put in a set of R/T springs.

Others may have differing opinions.

We have the only cam that will work with stock springs that I am aware of. Its [email protected] lift is .450, 114 LSA for FI and 110 LSA for carb. I would not go over .475" with stock springs. 300 hp would be my best guess.

The hughes whiplash is too big for stock springs and wont work with magnum compression ratio. Vacuum signal sucks too. If you have to get springs, there are way better cams out there. We also have a cam 210 or 213 with .520" lift 110. Lots of low end, great idle and reasonable MPG. Any larger should have guides cut down. After that, you can step up to 213,215,217 and lift from.533, .547 and .555. After that, you will need longer valves and taller spring height.

All of our cams are designed by myself and Jim at Racer Brown. We both think split duration/lift is old school design and necessary for factory or EQ heads as the exhaust flows much better than LA design and not needed, just adds extra wear to valve train. I am not a fan of whiplash cams, more for choppy idle than power.

Just my $.02

I am certainly not arguing the point, but it is advertised right on the Hughes web site that the Whiplash cams can be used with stock springs.

It is something I would never do myself, since decent springs are stupid cheap, but they do advertise that.

Magnum stock springs are barely good enough for stock, bite the bullet and get new springs and retainers. Had 4 bent valves off the heads I had.

if its a 360 magnum ,put a 318 magnum cam in it, cheap upgrade,

Yes it's a 360..I think I'd like to do a bigger cam and max out the hp potential of the magnum heads. Should be able to make 400 hp with stock heads

I'm gonna take them in and have them checked I don't think they are cracked. Do a nice race valve job and new springs

Decide on the cam first, and then get the springs to match that cam! I wouldn't risk the alternative.

The [email protected] and .510 lift with 1.6 is a nice cam that works well on a fairly tame street build. We have "bolt on" spring kit that requires no machine work for install but I would check guide clearance before I fired it up, I have seen some mag heads that would hit at .525" . Feel free to cal the shop or pm me if you need help choosing cam.

We did this for years before we got our own cams ground, still recomend it for anybody on a budget that cant afford $100 for a cam. If using FI, use the 5.2 pcm as well. Its a great improvement to factory 5.9 turd stick. Our regrind is a tiny bit larger lift than 5.2 and more duration but still a direct drop in without changing anything else.
